We were out on Dartmoor enjoying the views when in the distance we spotted a small hill surrounded by comparatively flat land, but on top of the hill was a church. So we looked at the map and once we had found the site, off we went.

This is Brent-tor, or Brentor.According to the web site Genuki/Devon....'Brentor is a parish of scattered houses, from 4-5 miles N. of Tavistock, rising in bold hills on the western confines of Dartmoor.

The church[St.Michael] is a very small and ancient structure, standing on the summit of the conical ''tor'', or rocky hill, which rises abruptly on an elevated down.It has a tower and three bells.

Tradition says that it was built by a merchant, who, being overtaken by a storm at sea, vowed, if he landed safely in Plymouth Sound, he would erect a church on the first point of land he saw.'

It was worth the walk to the top of the hill to see the church and also to enjoy the views.
Inside,it is quite small but charming.
Between Easter and September services are held every Sunday evening.
I imagine that it would be too cold to hold services through the winter, plus the fact that there is no proper path to the top, and it could possibly become quite dangerous under foot.

The weather was threatening to rain, hence the rather moody clouds that day.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Jean,
Overcast weather does take the fun away a bit, giving us less contrast. You have made up for the lack of light with a fine composition looking up that maintains viewer interest. The crop works well, and the bare trees on the left fit the mood. Maybe the sky could be darkened slightly to add to the drama. Regards,
Hakan

Hello Jean,

I really must echo so much of what Hakan has to say, especially regarding the the uphill aspect. The off centre composition works perfectly and the little bump of masonry on the right balances the trees very well.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Many thanks for your warm comments on 'Brooding clouds over the farm'.

Hi Jean,
It's a good, simple, to the point, picture with this view "uphill". Nice composition with natural colors.
Cheers
Marc

interesting place, the cloudy sky suits well with the architecture,
i just imagine a closer framing...

Church attendance is declining anyway, so I can't imagine too many people attending this church. It is very photogenic though and on top of the hill, it gives you an ideal POV below to emphasise its position. Maybe darkening the sky a touch would add some drama to the scene too. Interesting post.

Jean you've done well here to create a moody shot. We have so much overcast weather in the UK that I guess we just have to get on and deal with it and you've done that well here. Hakan's suggestion about darkening the sky made me curious so I had a go at a workshop - not sure if you'll like it or not - depends on your views about that sort of PP. Anyway good shot Jean.
cheers
Leon

Hi Jean,
Good composition with a church well placed on the top and in your composition, interesting, well taken.

Jean,

I justpassed you by a steaming volcano cone off sicilly!!! :)

Moody, rather ominous view of this appropriately windswept church. I'm guessing it's windswept.

I don't know which way you've cropped this image, I fancied it rather in portrait format with the church at the top and more grass below. Fun only workshop attached - but I didn't add enough. Too lazy.
Regards
Colin
