hello ivan

thanks for this share. i find it interesting that you picked this sepia rendition for the freedom monument soldiers: throws them right back to the second decade of the XX century (that's in my opinion actually where these particular uniforms belong). nonetheless, i am curious why you picked these soldiers to illustrate the independence day of latvia? if we look at the facts, the latest independence of latvia was not won by force of arms. rathr through peaceful demonstrations of will... maybe you have heard of actions such as people of the baltics standing on roads and joining hands in one huge chain across all three states in 1980-ies? anyway, thanks for the mention of my country's independence. i also find it curious that you have chosen to post this on 9th of may: the WWII victory celebration date for the soviet union and now Russia. i heard, today they have mounted a demonstration of arms unprecedented in scale in the last 17 years... rattling their sabers and bringing out panic amongst neighbors ;))

ps. technically speaking, it was not russians who occupied latvia in 1940 and then in 1944: it was the army and government of the soviet union.
