Where I live
Well, not exactly, i live on the other side of this canal, just 5 minutes walk from were i took this picture. Late evening light brought me to this pov were the houses are bathing in the last sunlight of the day.

Because some people here asked for more pictures from my hometown i am working on a project to show my city and it's highlights. Can take a while before i got the right ones i have in mind, but i am working on it.
Groningen has a mix of old and new architecture, no need to explain that this one must be placed in that last category. This is a new residential area build in the late 90s, not that large, but nice living near the water.

Neat, nicely composed, good light and warm colors, not a spectacular landscape but still a pleasant image. Not a bad place to live. ;)

Hej Henk,
It certainly looks like Gronningen is a pleasant place to live in. Good evening light brighten up the facades.

Hello Henk,

The lightning is very nice and this shot and I appreciate a lot the pattern it is drawing on the front of the houses. With in more the reflection on the canal, the photo is attractive for the look.
I will wait for the coming photos of your town.

Yves.

Are our photographic interests and interpretions related to our environ, namely, where we live and grow?
Seeing everyday those canals, those reflections, that light, those colors, if someone is to become a photographer, he would definitely love to make landscapes, and preferably no urban shots.
If i were the one to see this view everyday, i would definitely be filled up with an urge of catchibg the best skies and reflections. I think similar issue is valid for Leo. We have also seen where he passes by everyday while heading to work...
Just an idea of mine...
Cheers,
Deniz

Hello Henk,
Denise

Dag Henk,
This is a very nice place. It is probably good to enjoy such a nice view at only 5 minutes walking distance.
The colours and the light are perfect!
My only (small) regret is that the little boat on the river is already quite far. Anyway, if he was closer, he would have spoiled these very nice reflection, so it is okay ;-)
If you go on showing nice photos of your city, like this one, be aware that you will soon have to welcome a group of trekkeurs!!!
Take care,

Hello Henk,

You live in a very colored country. The composition is good but the light management is more better. The light and the shadows on the frontages of these houses are very well captured. The alignment of windows give a very good rythm with in addition the beautiful reflections.
The colors are very naturals. This is a big part of the success of this pictures.
Very good.

A+

Dominique

Bonjour Henk
Nicole

Hi Henk,
Warm evening tones make this look good. Those houses are not as charming as older Dutch architecture, but repeating patterns have some charm anyway. Canal provides reflections and makes this more Dutch. The rower is small but nice extra detail.
First from Groningen? At least I beat you on the coverage of the home town (154 pictures from Tampere and counting).

I knew you would find something beautiful close to home.;D You certainly know when to find the best light and those houses are illuminated beautifully. The other best thing is the stunning reflections mirrored in the canal. The perspective view of course draws us right into the scene, where we initially stop and admire the tall tree and its reflection before we carry on down the canal. The boats are also important features of the image; how else are we going to travel down teh canal. ;D. Hoping to see more!

Hallo Henk,
Excellent light, great use of the water, superp colors.
As usual ;o))
Marc

dag henk ;o),
so this is Home. looks (and am sure it is) a peaceful and pleasant corner of the world. The warm and slightly golden late afternoon sunlight embraces a carefully built and taken care of neighborhood, nothing less then we'd expect from a nation that even wrested land from the sea.
... visually atractive repetition and pleasant reflection, beautiful and beautifully used light.
am sure living near water is nice and maybe even visiting your neighbors by boat must be fun from time to time ;o).
thanks,
dora

Henk,
Excellent composition here using the diagonal created by the canal to lead the eye through the shot. The reflection gives the photo excellent depth and balance. The late afternoon lighting provides nice warm colors for the houses and landscape.
TFS,
Asa

Hi Henk,

So that's where you live...very nice place, huh? It's difficult to me to catch scenes from the place where I live, I feel kind of lazy. Does this happen to you too? Well, very nice perspective of the houses with two great bonus: the warm light coming from the left and the reflection. Very good work!
Regards,
Carlos

G'day Henk!

Another gem, mate! Even though you say the buildings are new, they blend in very well: being a 'water-lover', I could see myself living here and paddling one of those canoes, especially on an evening such as this!

Best wishes,
Jeff

Hoi Henk,
Fulvio.

Henk, it is nice to see the details of daily life, no mater where it is, and I know for sure that your rendition of it will always be a good one. This one uses the shadows from across the canal to break up the color on the line of homes. The resulting detail and color variations is great and makes what may not always be an interesting scene very interesting, super capture.

Greg

Hoi Henk,

Groetjes!
Dennis

Ciao Henk,
I add my favourite rate to the man another I read here.
I like very much the light and shadows alternation and the great sharpness of the reflection in the red beautiful light.
The diagonal line is a perfect idea for the composition.

hello, henk

nice to see this evening-light illustration of your neighborhood. i love the gliding, alternating (between light and shadow) light you have chosen. as to living right next to water: i know it can be very pleasant. but does that canal ever run over (as in flood over)?

i look forward to the rest of the series :)

kristaps

Exquisite colouring and tech all round, and what a pleasantly designed terrace.

Dag Henk,
Nice little houses row, I like the alternance of colors to strengthen the perspective and that orange looks so Dutch ! You have chosen the right time to have the light warm the hues even more.
Have a nice day JY

hello Henk
you live in a veary pleasant place,I don't know if the other side is so pretty, but the view that you give today is very nice, enhanced by the beauty of the light and the reflections! The advantage to photograph a place near your home,is that you have time to wait for the best light, that you did!

Hello Henk,
A nice neat and very orderly neighborhood you live in. Very soothing for the eyes with the late afternoon light, shadows, & sharp golden reflections. Great photo for me to study. Regards. Latiff.

Henk,

Hello Henk, good evening! You truly live in a wonderful area, and I guess you must have a little boat, at least I see you floating down the river - in my fantasy - with a glass of wine in your hand ... on an evening just like this one, enjoying the scenery, making an occasional stop-over talking to the neighborhood, I mean I would do this, what a dream life! Or are you never without your camera and there is no way to have a glass in your hand :))) I read Deniz' note while I was working and I guess he has a point, and it certainly has a great influence where we grow up, where we live, but also what kind of people are around us. I mean my banking town is not really a good source of inspiration but at least there are corners left that help me out.

You have caught the silence in my view, wonderful and smooth, an evening before summer came, what a way to get prepared. Barbara.

Hi Henk,

Beautiful place to live, Henk! The lights are very nice and warm and create good details on the facades, specially reflected on the mirrored waters. Hello Henk,
It's good to live so close to some water, isn't it? There just one street between our house and river Danube.
I really like your photo, it has a great depth created by the similar houses. Their revolving colours also look nice painted by the last reys of the setting sun. The reflections are also superb!
TFS!
Have a nice weekend! Best wishes,
Marci

Hey Henk, I think again your shot is too orange.. A way of correcting this in LR or ACR would be to increase the oranges luminance but again, LR and ACR doesn't do a good job making orange colour look plastic. Try this RAW file in DPP (Canon Digital Photo Professional), increase the saturation and create a similar curve to make the lighting look similar to this image here. You'll see what I mean.

However as an objective viewer I find your shot a good one, I had a disagreement with myself about the POV you chose, he said hmmmm nice but a bigger reflection would bring symmetry, and I say nahh the perspective is working better in this POV rather anything else. So any further comments about symmetry VS perspective would make me feel better :) The dark tones are suitable enough making a different kind of mood.

Many Regards
Stelios

Hi Henk

nice composition, lovely light bringing out the reds of the brickwork, and to top it all, wonderful reflections of the houses in the canal, have a nice weekend.

Hi, Henk -

Very nice! I like the way the houses look to be in alternating light and shadow. Good reflections, and the diagonals are almost too strong.

Best,
Dan

Hi Henk, love the diagonal composition and the mirror image. Superb sharpness here as I can see clearly the brick work on the wall of the last house. This looks a charming place to live. Excellent work.

Hello Henk -

This sure looks like a lovely town. I am glad to see that your town council has attempted to stay away from some of the new urban architecture of concrete, glass and steel and stayed with the traditional 19th and 20th century building materials. The light is perfect! But, I always like a reflection when one can be found.

It is really my bad luck that you will be in Canada/USA when I am in Amsterdam as visiting this village/city would be a nice trip into the Dutch countryside.

Thank you for sharing your corner of the world.

Goedenavond Henk,

Bedankt.

Prettige zondag,
John.

Hi Henk,
well lucky you! I mean not everybody lives in such a nice, photogenic area. I`m also lucky with where I live, I have this waesome view at the Alps, but my housing area isn`t interesting at all.
I really like the light you ahd here, it looks golden and therefore it adds a lot to the picture, the view down on the water is just great with some nice reflections and the boat is a great detail! Thanks for that image, looking forward to seeing many more pictures from your hometown.

Take care and have a nice sunday

great lights in that picture

Hi Henk,
Though you live to another side of the canal, this sight is absolutely magnificent.
I like the peace that is breathed here, and the diagonal that you have obtained with your setting, the perspective is deep and elegant, and the light on this architecture heightens its beauty, while it offers us a few beautiful colors.
The reflections on the water are the final detail for this great composition.
Great work, my friend.
Best regards,
Josep

Hello Henk!
Incredible colors, wonderful reflection and an excellent POV, with the diagonal line!
TFS - Congratulations!
Warmest regards,

Salut Henk,

Yes, great perspective on this row of houses that shows a different side from the more typical construction we usually see from the Netherlands. They surely look very seductive under such warm light, along the canal. Good use of the distinctive tree, both for its location and as a stopper that keeps the eye into the scene.

Slight little detail; maybe the cropping is too close to the chimney and houses top. A couple of pixels more would have make them feel less trapped.

It's cool to see your neighbourhood! I thought you were living in a giant mushroom!

André

That´s a great idea. And will gladly follow you along. I like this starter. You say it's a modern complex, but it also seems old. That's why I like about central European architecture and architects. They always respect history... Not a thing you'll see in Portugal. The warm light is great, just as I like it. Very beautiful.

Hello Henk,

Hoi Henk,
Uitstekend fotowerk, bedankt!
Groeten,
Lars

Hello Henk
The light on rhe houses is really amazing. I like this kind of light and each time i can take photos in thoses condititions, I do it. The water is calm so the refelexion is good. I agree the boat can be nearest but is this case the reflexions could have be pertubated.
Cheers
JP

Beautiful point of view!
Best regards!

Henk,
now that I saw where you live I'm quite curious to see the place where we will meet. Moraine Lake, Spirit Island, Louise Lake ... what will it be?
There is actually not alot to be said about this shot. For some reason I have the impression that everything was said and I'm not in the mood to read through all 89 critiques that you got so far on this post. However, there are two little details and I might be wrong about it, but I have the feeling that the frame is to close on that roof in the right upper corner and I also have the impression of a slight tilt of about 1 grade to the right.
See you soon ...
Peter

Bonsoir Henk,
Which fantastic gallery. I did not see everything but I am going to return. It is incredible, after 1 year on TE, not to have known you earlier. Here, I like the rhythm created by the succession of these houses on the canal and also the succession of the shadows and the light on facades.
How lucky you are to live near a place as this one!
A bientôt
Diane
