Fishing on Elterwater.
Elterwater is a small village and lake in the heart of the English Lake district, Cumbria.
The lake is quite small but very calm and peaceful, fishing skiffs only. The 'mountains' at the right background are the the Langdale Pikes, among the highest in England and are much used for climbing training and practice. Many visitors will miss this lake, just north of Ambleside, on their way to the perhaps over-known Grasmere, a few miles away.
There is a good walk from a lovely Inn at Elterwater, along the lake to another Inn at Skelwith Bridge, with some small falls along the way, back over the hills (left foreground) with time for yet another rest at the Inn.
The day was very bright and hot but I wanted the pikes to be reasonably exposed, resulting in under-exposure of the lake itself, a sultry effect which turned out OK.
The ripples in the foreground are from a large swan which landed just to my left as I took the shot. |
