Overcast with partly showers with SW to W breeze between 14 to 25 knots said the weather forecast on Saturday 28th of June, the sailors’ but not the photographers delight!
On the second Saturday of the Kiel Week, this year it was the 28th of June, a special program highlight always takes place: the traditional sailing ships gathering in the inner-firth for the great windjammer (tall ships) parade. This spectacle is also always a magnet for tens of thousands of spectators, who gather along the inner-firth to watch this grand event. The windjammer parade is featuring more than 100 sailing ships, both large and small. And at least the same number of boats is accompanying these tall ships, bringing spectators who paid a nice amount of money for this passage, close to the parade. The Kiel Fjord is really crowded. It is a magnificent sight indeed, over one hundred gaff riggers and topsail schooners, barquentines, brigantines, brigs, barges and full-riggers from a host of nations under sails.
In the background you can see the ferry from Kiel to Göteborg, this day also bringing paying guests close to the parade, the price for a ticket was 99 €.
The ship in the foreground is the barge “Alexander von Humboldt”, that has served as a fire ship until 1986. Today the “Alex” is a training vessel and she is well known all over the world because of her green sails, originally just a gag in an advertisement campaign launched by a large German brewery. Since the campaign has been very successful she kept the green sails. So the “Alex” is quite a nice example for the power of advertisement.
In app. two years she is supposed to be replaced by a new ship, the “Alex II”, because the preservation of the old Alex has become too expensive.

Hallo Harriet,

wunderschöne Aufnahme der Windjammer-Parade, schade dass das Wetter dir so übel mitgespielt hat, trotzdem ein tolles Foto
mit viel Bewegung und einer guten Erläuterung..
Schönen Abend..

Hi Harriet,

A very impressive ship, especially when seen among all the other small boats and the modern ferries. There is a lot of speed and action in this picture.

I was once in Kiel during Kieler Woche, going back to Gothenburg. I took a lot of photos from the ferry in the background here... Most of all I remember all the orchestras in the Kiel center!

Greetings from Gothenburg
Gunnar

Hello Harriet,

a good image with all those ships.
The "Alex" is really impressive.
I agree with you that the weather conditions might have been perfect for sailors but surely not for photographers. But non the less you did a great job.
I tried a small workshop on your image just to bring out the colours of the "Alex" bit more. It was done within a minute. I hope you don't mind. Let me know what you think about if if you like.
Thanks for sharing this image and the good explanatory note.
Regards, Britta

Hi Harriet, this is great. From the beautiful green sails to the very background big ferry/cruise ship, they are all there experiencing the good sailing wind. Well done.
Antonio

hello Harriet,
I love tall ships and had not seen a photo of the Alex prior to yours. Those green sails are wonderfully distinctive.Well captured!
I like the composition--the BG of boats adds to the dynamic quality of the shot.
Take care, Joni

Bonsoir Harriet
Il y avait foule sur le mer ce jour-là. Tu as su appuyer sur le déclic au bon moment pour mettre en compétition ce superbe voilier et la vedette rapide.
Merci pour le partage et bonne soirée.

Hello Harriet, What a splendid sight!
I think that the overcast conditions have added to the atmosphere of this shot - the green sails look very good against the silver grey sky. The ships in the background form an interesting 'band' across the horizon.
Thanks for another interesting note.
Best wishes...Maggie

Hi Harriet, excellent image, sense of movement, great contrast of colours and of boats, good capture, chau chau,

Maria

Hello Harriet!
Although the weather was not the nicest and the color of the sea neither, all those boats in the background and the bigger one, much more colorful, ahead of all of them, made this picture such a great and beautiful scene!
TFS - Congratulations!
Greetings from Brazil,

Hallo Harriet,
That's the ships concentration here that makes this one special, and that tall onewith its green sails is very impressive. Now these ships have moved west, this week end such gatherings take place in both Rouen and Brest.
Have a nice day JY

The weather might not have been too good to be outdoors, but it certainly contributes to a great image, Harriet. I like the action portrayed here - very dramatic. The old ship is lovely and the green colour scheme makes it stand out. Nice composition.

Guten Tag Harriet

Fantastic repetition of the white yachts with the old green sailed windjammer breaking the pattern. Reminds me of tall ships parades in Sydney & Brisbane. Tfs!

Hello Harriet,

Very interesting notes. As a countryside lady, I find the photos and notes about the sea fascinating.

Superb pov. The Alex really steals the show with her magnificent sails, reminiscent of days of old! The small boat next to her makes for good contrast and improved composition.
Great shot!

Hallo Harriet,
Despite the sky color, this is also a photo delight. I like very much the huge contrast between the big Alex and the small boats. And also the contrast between the sail boats and the motor boats.
You make me wonder: why most sailing boats use white sail? It would be much nicer it they have all different color sails.
Greetings

Hello my dear friend Harriet,

Hallo Harriet,

Hello Harriet,
A sea full of sailing ships.
Good capture of the one on the foreground with the green sails. They contrast nice with the others far away and with the enormous clouded sky.

Ciao Harriet,
what a stupendous image! Thanks to yours interesting notes I have discovered the history of this beautiful sailing ship also famous in Italy for the publicity of the beer. Excellent the management of the light, with such a cloudy sky, but that it gives the feeling of a windy day. Excellent job, compliments.
Ciao and happy week

Stunning image Harriet, So much going on here with so many sail boats, but wow, what a sight that is, All is reall good, Good sharpness and clarity considering that it was a cloudy day and your subject are on the move. Great DoF from the main sail boat to the little ones on the back. Compositionally would be better without the blue boat, but there is not much you can do. Great shot, thanks for sharing.

Hallo Harriet,
Maybe if the sun was shining it would be more colourful, but the high contrast, over exposure and such could ruin it all, so it's not that bad you caught grey weather. You offer a very nice presentation of that intersring parade, with all those smaller ships following the "big Alex", which detach itself from the rest not only for its size, but also for it's all green colour.

Hi Harriet,

I'm interested in everything in connection with the sea and, in this sense, I'm happy to see, for the first time, a sailing ship of these characteristics fitted with green sails (in nice conjunction with the painting of the hull). It looks really impressive and both, your well written and documented note and your fine picture, are in consonance with her magnificence. Excellent work. Congratulations!

Hi Harriet,

Splendid gathering of old boats. This armada is fantastic and points out that which we have every year in July in Brest in Brittany. Spectacle to which I cannot assist my holidays are in August !!! This three masts is superb, I like much the effect of depth in the image. Very pretty photograph on this maritime festival and thank you for the note Harriet.

Hi Harriet.
Terrific shot of this dynamic and spectacular fjord scene. The colour of the sails is certainly different, and very eye-catching, especially on this grey day. The leading blue boat makes a nice contrast. I think Britta did a good job with the WS - the clouds are reinforced too. Anyway, interesting shot and interesting note, well done.

Very impressive. We almost feel the wind. It's true that there's no big contrast and saturation, but i think it's ok like this. The pale effect looks like fog or humidity in the air. The WS is OK, but i think the original keeps a better mood.

Hi Harriet,
Interesting composition to show the festival atmospere, is not easy to keep in their own position to avoid strike with the others ships, we always see the busy road in traffic jam, but seldom to see the busy broad sea, thanks for sharing.

This is it! A great shot of a vast array of sails, from the huge one in the FG to the tinny in the BG. Very well taken despite the weather conditions and that you were taking this from a boat.

Hello Harriet,

This is one of the finest shots I've seen on Trekearth. As soon as I can free up some space, I intend to put it among my favorites. I've seen the races of tall ships 2-3 times while cruising in Northern Europe. The way you've captured them attests to the spectacular composition, colors and resolution. Indeed, it has inspired me to put up a sea shot from one of the Norwegian Fjords. I also know the Kiel Canal where the ship on which I was lecturing, the Royal Viking Sun, made a spectacular passage in 1990.

Warm regards,

Bulent

A very nice viw of "Alex" on this rather cloudy day. I regret the positionning of the blue tug like boat which slightly masks part of the bow, but the background full of sails is beautifull. Perhaps a little tilt to the right too.

All the best,

Emmanuel

Hello Harriet, This one is special. I think you did a marvelous job here with the bad weather working in your favour making the green sails & hull stand out against the grey skies & waters. The congestion of small boats surrounding the tall ship adds atmosphere & excitement. Interesting note.
Well done, congratulations.

Hi Harriet,
Very nice effect with this great contrast ... superb boat with sails, well taken.

What a beautiful ship, even the dull weather adds a lot of atmosphere. I also like the presence of hundreds of sails around, I just wish "Greif" was more separated from the main subject, or was not in the frame at all.

Ich mag das matte Licht und dann kommt dieses Gruen, das heraussticht, nur etwas, aber es braucht nicht mehr, das Schiff spricht Geschichte. Toll ... Gruesse aus der Schweiz, Barbara.

Hi Harriet,
With a title like Sailor's delight, I could not resist your photo. Anyone can take a great picture when the light is perfect; it takes more expertise to get good pictures when the light is bad. You did well with getting excellent detail in the clouds which I think is key here.

As to the WS, I usually try all three auto's at the end of processing the picture. Often one is better than the others and I usually only use one. Under edit, you can also fade all of t5he autos, and I think that's what I would have done to maintain your excellent detail while lightening the picture.
HLJ, Pat

Because of the greyness of the day the only colour that is really noticeable is that of the ship and the boat in the foreground. The detail you have captured is wonderful with good front to back sharpness. I really like the subtlety of all the tones in the image.

Hi Harriet,
Never saw your galery, so, welcome on TE. This is a great picture especially because of such nice and soft green colours under that gray sky. Cheers
Marc

hello Hariet
I didn't put yet any critiques on this masterpiece where the colours, the atmoshere, and of course this wonderful green ship are really superb! The grey weather permit to find a great harmony of colours,I think it's better than if the sky was blue!Really nice!I wonder what will this ship become in 2 years, when it will be replaced!
Regards.
Pascale

Hej Harriet,
Your photo looks like an old painting from the days when the sea was ruled by lord Nelson and co.
Ha en skön helg!

Hi Harriet,

Looking for some recognizable places in Denmark I recognized this tall ship in Kiel. I remembered that I saw the ship two days ago in Den Helder, where it was moored at the end of the tall ship race 2008 and fortunately it was on one of the 470 pictures I made that day of this event. I added it in the workshop. The weather was just as poor as you had in Kiel.

Hi Harriet. Despite the dull light, this composition works really well with all the boats crammed into the background (and the big sailing ship perectly positioned in frame), although I did wonder whether you had done a levels adjustment. And then I saw Britta's WS and wow . . . what a difference that makes . . . a little bit of simple PP and its a briliiant shot! Cheers . . . David

Harriet ...that's what i call trafic ...((:

I stoped on this one from your amazing photo colection.

Well, you managed to get the impression of multitude much better than me! This is a great photo with the very impressive "Alex" in the foreground with its original green sails, and the multitude of other boats in the background! A magnificent capture!
Best wishes!
MarieLouise.

I found your all time high points glorious sailing photo Harriet. I simply cannot believe that you already have over 1700 trek points on only two pages of postings. This photo is really incredible to say the least. All you wished for was better lighting. Thanks for sharing.

Bonjour,

tres belle prise de vue, le ciel est splendide pour ce style de photo

Hello,

Interesting this photo to evidence the success of this sails parade. The green colors of the "Alex". It is working well in opposition to the grey light and grey clouds background.
Even if the lightning was not so easy, the results is there.
Regarding the composition, I would have only liked to have more distance in foreground between the blue boat and the green one to make easier the reading.

Yves.

I think this is a fantastic picture. I love the green sails. This has a very nice mood to it, a calm image thats enjoyable to view. Good work! TFS

ciao harriet,
oggi commento questa tua foto perchè la reputo un capolavoro.
Le vele verdi,il rimorchiatore con lo scafo blu,il tutto avvolto da un cielo così grigio è veramente stupendo,
saluti e complimenti
maurizio

What a sail ships impressive experience, very well captured, blue and grey colours mixed with the sea and the clouds transmits cold and wet feeling. I would like I be there.

Best regards.

Woww Harriet,

Es una foto impresionante por el color de ese barco de vela, ademas del contraste en los dos barcos de distinto tipo, me gusta el contraste de colores, y la perspectiva genial, muy buen trabajo.

Un saludo,
Elena
