In my last post you could just see the Lions Gate Bridge from the air so this is a closer view looking north from Stanley Park. Also known as the First Narrows Bridge it was built in the 1930's to connect what is now North and West Vancouver to the downtown core. It was originally a toll bridge. Unfortunately there was not a lot of foresight back then as this is a three lane bridge with the middle lane now acting as a counterflow lane during rush hour. It is situated at the entrance to Burrard Inlet and the Vancouver waterfront. Taken in 1996 and scanned from a slide.

The construction began on March 31 1937. The bridge cost precisely $5,873,837.17 to build. It all began when the Guinness family (of beer fame), decided to invest in land on the North Shore. In 1932, they purchased 4,000 acres of West Vancouver mountain side through a syndicate called British Pacific Properties Ltd. The plan was develop the land and get people to move there. Part of the Guinness plan was to build a bridge over the First Narrows, the existing 2nd Narrows Bridge being deemed to be to far away and “unreliable”. The project proved popular during this depression period, and objections over the fact that the alignment would entail an access road through the heart of Stanley Park were overcome. The job-creating project and the spin-off that would come from the building in West Vancouver were impossible to resist.

great shot in excellent format. Beautiful diagonal line.

Hi Phil,
Great close-up, when i have time next month i will go there and try to make something similar, but it would not be easy to make it like you did here. Taken 12 years ago, but still very high quality. Very good scanwork because light and detail look really perfect...
Regards, Henk

Hey, Phil,
jeeze, this made me laugh. The first photo of yours I see? I look it over and think "Wow! Phil." Looks like I'd get a bit more original after awhile. :)) That lighting is brilliant and the bridge stands out in wonderful detail against the cloudy background. Beautiful clear colors, outstanding POV and vertical framing and I love the light and shadow play. Marvelous shot! Many thanks and kindest wishes,
Shelly

Hi Phil,

Great composition of this huge bridge... Nice sharpness and wonderful, foggy background - very like it!

greetings,

mikeo

This is a wonderful graphic image. The dark background is perfect for the sunlit cables of the bridge. Well composed and framed so one of the lines goes directly from the bottom corner. Good quality scan

Hi Phil,
A great perspective of this amazing bridge. I really like how the visual swing is upwards to the left. Your shot is sharp as a tack and the details are stunning. Well done and TFS. Gerald

hi Phil

You have captured a superb pov of this famous bridge with this composition.

My last trip to Vancouver was 1984 and yes, the traffic was already converted to mobile lane at the center to allow easy management of rush hour. tfs

Hi Phil,
Beautiful vertical presentation of this stunning silver blue span that stands out particularly well against the blue hills that are split very nicely by the silver sky.
Excellent clear colors and fantastic sharpness to this architectural beauty.
Regards, Tom

Hi Phil
I like very much the point of view you chose. That's a stylish bridge and I like its architecture and colours. The foggy and cloudy sky makes a good background. Excellent contrasts too. Well done!
Best regards
Denis!
