Photographer’s Note

It was cloudy and overcast yesterday. The sun was behind a dark grey clouds in the east and the clouds were rolling west.

Just a minute after this photo of Mount Kinabalu was taken, the mountain was blanketed with clouds throughout the day. To have a better chance of shooting the mountain sans the clouds, you need to be here just after 6am.

This is one of the places where you could see the mountain without any cables or wires running across your sight. About 2km from the National Park, on your way down to Kundasang, watch your left for this location.

This location used to be a rubbish dumping ground until recently when the Meteorological Department set up a small weather station nearby.

Hi Rabani,

Many interesting contrasts here .. the stark mountain against the delicate flowers .. the way the contrast interacts with the reds .. thoughtful sky as well .. very nice. take care, John

Assalamaulaikum Rabani,
what a shot of this Kinabalu! with flowers to enhance the foreground. the cannas are really glowing and pointed to the mount. Great colours with dramatic sky to give impact to what we call Kinabalu.

Most people can count by no of years when they make a trip to Kundasang or Kinabalu Park but I can see you do the reverse by no of trips per year. On a Sunday morning like this, with fine weather and light, you caught a nice pov from this climbing spot.

I have seen how your road runs to Kundasang and on right side you can see valleys while on the left side, valleys ending up to this tallest mountain. One really do not need to go very far to find such a spot, yet need to explore where to shoot from. On my last trip, the moment my eyes opened in the lodge, I sneaked out with my camera in search of the morning view and true, the clear sky would not last more than 40 minutes before the clouds layer blanket over.

For this mountain, there seem to be endless probabilities to choose the angle. But the light is one of most tricky, with the viewpoint.
