No safety fence Photo

Photographer’s Note

Dun Aengus is a ancient stone fort, probably more than 2000 years old. It is a special place and spectacular. A part of the outer wall is visible at the top right. It sits high on a cliff on Inishmore in the Aran Islands. The fort is open on the cliff side ( no chance of attack from that side) which seems to encourage some people to the very edge. If it was here in Australia we'd probably have a safety fence to protect the "public" and spoil the nature of the site.

Ian,
On the other hand.....if they were standing where you are standing, looking across at themselves - perhaps they'd be tempted to take a few steps inland! Ignorance is bliss, I guess!

Very nice - thanks for sharing, reminds me of the Table mountain cliffs in SA .. no safety ropes round those either - the way it should be.

I am sure about the fence here in Australia. However, it would be not at the edge of the cliff but 10 or 20 meters away, spoiling everything, from the nature of the site to the desire of people to look down the cliff. Anyway, this is not in Australia and people can freely admire and enjoy the site. The vertical frame is excellent and conveys very well the hight and the danger of the place. Well done.

Hi Ian,
Very nice shot, that shows us how impressive and dangerous Dun Aengus cliffs are. Surely among the most impressive of Ireland ! I remember a few years ago I got longer on the edge of the cliffs, looking at the waves on foot of the cliffs, very impressive. I also remember the noise of the waves exploding on foot of the cliffs, terrible ! Thanks for this shot that reminds me nice moments !

Excellent shot with those people ! Vertigeneous !
The vertically frame is really good !
But I've seen many places with high cliffs in Australia without any fences (except the Great Ocean Road...)!
But if it was in France, that's typically the kind of place where, if somenone fall down, his family is gonna process the mayor or political man with responsabilities because there were no fences...
Anyway, your photo is very good, with great sharpness and colors :)

Hi Ian,
This view is really terrifying! The sharpness and the POV are so good that I am afraid just looking at. It is a lack of discernment to go there. Everybody are susceptible to slip and if it happens there, it is over.
It is impossible to put fences in every abyss of the world!
The place is very beautiful, anyway.

What a spectacular site, and you have photographed it flawlessly. The colors, textures and resolution are all excellent, and all complemented by a succinct, but informative note. Please, don't worry about critiquing it, but don't you think it is evocative of the Swallow's Nest Cast in Yalta.

Hi Ian, Good POV to show such a steep drop off. Agree with your comments about safety signs in Aus. The clarity and textures of the rockwall is excellent. Good the rocks are solid as in many places earthquakes could loosen some of that material. The Luck of the Irish, perhaps. TFS. Murray.
