Photographer’s Note
Newport first “A” Power Station was established as a coal-fired power station by the Victorian Railways in 1918 to supply energy for the electrification of the suburban rail system, the plant also supplied bulk electricity to the Melbourne City.
In 1923 Newport “B” station was built to supply electricity to Melbourne until the Yallourn power station entered service.
In 1950 the Newport 'C' was built with upgraded capacity.
The Power Station boilers were originally fuelled by imported New South Wales black coal, but were converted to burn brown coal briquettes in the 1950s. Use of the plants declined with the opening of newer power stations in Latrobe Valley, being used only for peak loads in later years.
Newport “D”
Newport 'D' is the current power station on the site. Originally proposed by the State Electricity Commission as a pair of 500 MW generation units in the 1971, trade union, local resident and environmental protests delayed construction of the plant.
In April 1977 the final decision was made, that the power station at Newport would proceed, but with only one 500 MW generator unit. The power station is used for meeting peak loads to the electricity grid.
Not sure why it looked like this on this particular day, I suspect weather conditions; because it burns natural gas the smoke coming out of the chimney is clean & hardly visible. The water was smooth whilst we were there, clearly seen on my previous posts but as we were leaving the wind picked up, clearly seen by the effect it had on the water.

Hi Santo,
The colours of this image are very attractive. I find the image oversharpened though, specially on the water. Nice perspective of this plant and good capture at this time of the day. Thanks Santo :-)

Hi Santo, As you say it is a gas fired station so "smoke" is unlikely. I imagine that it is steam or water vapour. When hyrocarbons burn you get CO2 and H20 (if I remember chemistry correctly - which may not be the case). There may also be steam produced through water cooling. Whether the water vapour is visible might depend on the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. Or maybe it is something else :-).
On the image, I'm with Roberto on the oversharpening, visible on the ripples in the water where the contrast is a bit too high to look real. Given that, it is surprising that there are no halos around the masts, perhaps you masked them when you sharpened? I think the red saturation is a also a bit high. The colour in the sky looks good, not real, but good :-). The bright red from the lights though looks a bit odd. cheers, Steve

Hello Santo. Very good result from D200 image sensor shot at ISO100. The glow and the shine on the ripples are brilliant. I like the land/sky division and the framing as a whole. Best regards. Jusni

Hi Santo,
I love your sense of humour, cynicism has always appealed to me.
Great capture, the sky is marvelous and the way you've managed the light is superb.
The water looks a bit oversharpened to me, but could be the result of the wind causing the effect.
Good POV and composition.

Hey Santo,
Oh, I see you`re continuing with your evening shots, very good. I like this one. It has loads of elements, but beside that I like industrial photography, very strong and poignant on the colors, with a fine composition to it. Extremely beautiful colors, especially on the horizon.
My best regards.

Hello Santo,
There is certainly an eerie atmosphere to this picture. The light is fantastic and the red, yellow and green reflections almost mind-blowing. The clouds remind me of Doomsday on some old painting.

hello Santo
You have combined a good evening light of the sky and clouds with the reflection on water from the industrial zone of this area to make a great slow shutter exposure. The -1EV has given a tough UE but it does bring out the light on the shoreline and the end result is a nice overall balance of tone.
Any pp work for the FG? tfs

Hello Santo,
It is true that to produce in mass of electricity, clean energy to the eyes of the users, moves pollution far from on their premises. Finally, nuclear energy is not so badly…
Excellent night image.
Have a nice day

C'mon Santo, don't be cruel! We need electricity as the air we breathe everyday, and power stations can be not the better ones we would like, but is what we have!...By the way, and about the photo, nice colurs and reflections on the water!
Best wishes

Ciao Santo ammiro molto la tua capacità di interpretare i notturni tirando fuori il massimo della spettacolarità.
In questo scatto colpiscono le tinte multicolori assunte dal cielo e la grande definizione di tutti dettagli.
Energia pulita?
Beh lasciamo perdere!
Una buona domenica e un caro saluto

Hello Santo,
This is a continuation of your previous post entitled "Julie's Place", both taken on the same date, perhaps even from the same vantage point. I can see the Scenic Flight banner in both. The sky in this shot is darker and very dramatic, seems to be taken much later than the previous one.
The maritime elements such as the boats, jetty and masts are all very sharp and there is no sign of oversharpening, so I believe the ripple effect is the result of the wind blowing from the left, evident from the chimney's smoke. I think you have captured the essence of the moment - quiet and yet a dramatic marine ambiance with excellent warm colours.
Best regards
Alfred

Hello Santo,
Amazing colour palette, in particular the sky looks special!
It works well with the low light capture, and the details in the building structures are just fine...
Good textures and fine play of light in the sky!
