Photographer’s Note
Drawing Room, Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria
(Neuschwanstein= New Swan Rock)
At the time of the king's death (Jun 1886), the castle was not finished.
But the delicate spires of Neuschwanstein rising above the Bavarian gorges have come to make up one of Europe's iconic buildings.
The castle is a landmark well-known by many non-Germans, and was used by Walt Disney in the twentieth century as the inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty Castles at Disneylands around the world.
The grounds are open to tourists, and the king's residential quarters can be visited, as can the servant's rooms, the kitchens and the monumental throne room. The throne itself was never completed, although sketches show how it might have looked on completion.
