one of the highlights of last weekend was a completely unexpected two-hour ride along Vermont's West River in this cute red steamboat, which happens to be one of only 800 steamboats in the US and, without doubt, is the most famoust boat in the State of Vermont.

we had stopped near the river in our quest to find THE autumn colour/reflection photo when this boat glided past us from right to left, happily blowing thick white steam in greeting when it noticed us. as it often happens to me in such decisive moments, my camera froze, the polariser filter fell of, the setting got messed up and I all could do was sigh and turn back towards the car. five minutes later I heard the steamboat's whistle again, meaning the boat is going back. I run. heavy hiking boots, camera bag, camera and all, but I was determined not to miss the shot for the second time. this is what I got.

later on we met Eric, who built this boat and who kindly invited us for a ride. it will be up to Kristaps to tell the rest of the story.

steamboats have been around since early 18th century. the French inventor Denis Papin was the first who in 1704 constructed a ship powered by steam engine which was mechanically linked to paddles. the era of the steamboats, however, began in America in 1787, when John Fitch (American inventor, clockmaker, and bronzesmith) made the first successful trial of a 14-meter (45 ft) steamboat on the Delaware River on 22 August 1787. by 1814, there were regular steamboat and freight service between New Orleans, Louisiana and Natchez, Mississippi, and between 1814 and 1834, New Orleans steamboat arrivals increased from 20 to 1200 a year. steam propulsion and railroads developed separately, but it was not until railroads adopted the technology of steam that they began to flourish. by the 1870s, railroads had begun to supplant steamboats as the major transporter of both goods and passengers.
