Semeru's ash cloud Photo

Photographer’s Note

Semeru is one of the most active volcanoes in the world: it emits about every 15 minutes an enormous clouds of ash (up to 1 to 2 km high). Highly motivated hikers may reach the summit (3700m) to assist closely to these huge wreathes ... Brigitte Bibiweb’s picture published in TE in 2004 impressed me and contributed to my decision to discover Indonesian volcanoes.

Le Semeru est un des volcans les plus actifs au monde : il émet environ toutes les 15 minutes d’énormes nuages de cendre (atteignant de 1 à 2 km de haut). Les randonneurs très motivés pourront atteindre le sommet (3700m) pour admirer de près ces immenses volutes... La photo de Brigitte Bibiweb publiée en 2004 sur TE m’avait beaucoup impressionné et à participé à ma décision de vouloir découvrir de plus près les volcans d’Indonésie.

Hi Georges!
This is a fantastic shot of this active volcanoe.It`s my dream to see one and come as close as you.
The exposure is great and I like the composition with this low horizon and this impressive collumn of smoke and ashes.

A most impressice photo! You managed the difficult light very well here. The structures of the cloud are very well visible and one can imagine the dynamics of this ejection. A really fantastic photo! Thank you for showing this - and for the links!

This is an excellent picture. The compo is great with the huge column of ashes and smoke occupying the vertical in the center of the frame. At what time of the day was the shot taken? Well done.

Dommage que la lumiére n'était pas au rendez-vous car l'irruption est impressionnante. Au Costa Rica, je suis allé voir le volcan Arenal et la-bas ses grondements font avoir la chair de poule.

J'y suis alle aussi, mais moins pres!
Ca merite de marcher un peu pour faire une photo + impressionnante. Je publierai peut etre la mienne dans qq temps si je veux bien retrouver la diapo.

j'ai été egalement impressionné par cette image de Brigitte, mais je n'ai pas fait le pas !! peut-être un jour. et ton image ravice cette envie. il y a peu d'endroit de la planette qui me fascinent autant.
tu ramenes une image superbe. et certainement de fabuleux souvenirs

That is just amazing!! First, just because of the existance of such a regular event!! But second the spectacular detail with which you captured the plume. Your short focal length makes it seem that you were dangerously close. Thank you for the map link, it makes me wonder if this was taken from the sky? Just an incredible work!!

évidement, avec ses petits "proutes" le Stromboli est un peu ridicule face à ça !
La photo de Bibiweb m'avais également impressionné et donnée envie d'y aller, la tienne en remet une couche !
