- Some famous photographers have suggested that photographing colorful places such as India in bw may not do justice to the colorful traditions of India. Indigenous Indian art, they suggest, has had little monochrome tradition. Frankly, these suggestions could not have been made very seriously. Indian art has had a long tradition of monochromatic art: line drawings of Patachitra (Orissa), Kalighat pats (Bengal), Madhubani paintings (Bihar), Warli paintings (Karnataka) and the Kavi art (near Goa) are a few examples. My profile picture is an example of Warli monochrome art. Even more to the point, one needs to look at the ornate black and white embroidery or knit works on silk or cotton saris to appreciate that monochromatic rendition has been a strong tradition in Indian art.
Here is a quote from a conversation between Einstein and Tagore (July 14, 1930, Berlin):
TAGORE: Melody and harmony are like lines and colors in pictures. A simple linear picture may be completely beautiful; the introduction of color may make it vague and insignificant. Yet color may, by combination with lines, create great pictures, so long as it does not smother and destroy their value.
EINSTEIN: It is a beautiful comparison; line is also much older than color...
Unlike the color of Indian cities today, it actually wasn't like that always. I remember my city, Calcutta, in almost monochrome, a reflection of which I hear in a BBC interview with Don McCullin, the famous British war photographer: "The tragedy about India now, like everywhere else, when I first went to India, with a very distinguished travel writer called Eric Newby, he showed me Calcutta and Delhi; it looked like a snow storm, because everyone was wearing the national dress - it was called a dhoti, white you know, pristine white."
