With Photoshop, selecting the color of the sky I made two layers of this picture: one with the head of the animal and one with sky.
Layer head: changed the level to correct the underexposition and sharpened a little.
Layer sky: changed also the levels but not so much as on the other layer (I like blue skies). Applied also gaussian blur to the sky to eliminate noise (altough there was not very much)
Finaly merged the layers.

Selected and sent as a first layer/
Applied "passe haut" at 10px, darkness at 38%.
Re another layer from the original applied a translation of 1px up and 1 ps down to have a slight "decalage on the original" then lights at 40/
Flattned.
As the picture seemed to have received already sharpness I had to let it and finished whith a neuw contrast.
The interest of this works is to work without "hurting" the original which remains the basis of the publicatin.
The translation is to give a light relieve.
