 Dodging and Burning | Wandering_Dan
(3233) [2008-09-20 12:06:35] | I used dodging on the midtones at low (17%) exposure and a fairly large brush, lightening parts of the cliff on the right and also the trees in the left foreground. I overdid some of the trees, so I selected Burn, with a small brush, and put some of the shadow back.
This isn't a polished fix, just an example to show what can be done on selected parts of the image without altering the gorgeous amber light. |

 Guide Jumps | Wandering_Dan
(3233) [2008-09-09 09:56:07] | | This shot was taken a few seconds after the main one. The guide liked to jump into the river immediately after running each of the rapids (no one from his raft ever fell in unintentionally, so I guess this was his way of celebrating that). I didn't know he would do this, so this is a lucky shot. |

 Veritcal Crop | Wandering_Dan

(3233) [2008-08-22 11:48:59] | | This is a wide shot of the new building. The view in the main photo is of the lower point of the cube, to the left of the lamppost. |

 Brush | Wandering_Dan
(3233) [2008-08-07 08:29:09] | | I used a small brush at high mag to tone down the blown-out light on the lamppost. I selected different colors for different spots, to try to recreate an actual image. There's lot more that could be done on it, but this gives the idea. |

More Color, But also More Wind | Wandering_Dan
(3233) [2008-07-14 09:00:03] | | My third and probably final shot from the July 4th fireworks in Marin. This one is more colorful than the main post, but if you look closely, you can see that the wind - which you can also see from the smoke pattern - shook the tripod during the exposure, despite my efforts to block it. Wind can be like that. |

 Hue/Saturation | Wandering_Dan
(3233) [2008-07-06 11:57:03] [1] | I selected an area around the foreground tree and used it to create an adjustment layer for Hue/Saturation. Then I selected the Yellows, and narrowed the sliders at the bottom of the H/S window until only the colors in the tree were included. (I did this by sliding Saturation all the way to zero, then watching which colors went to black as I adjusted the color slider.) When I was satisfied that I had the right range, I made final adjustments to those colors: Hue -7, Saturation -11. Lightness -14. I left the blending at Normal and opacity at 100%.
Because I was limiting the adjustment to a small range of color, I did not need to be exact in my selection mask; I knew the blue sky would be out of the range. At the same time, using the selection mask guaranteed that the other greens and yellows in the picture would not be affected. |

 Saturation; Linear Burn | Wandering_Dan
(3233) [2008-06-26 10:32:56] [1] | | I used Hue/Saturation, lowering Sat. by 18%, and Lightness by 8%. Then I selected the foreground color as the edge of the flame, and used a Linear Burn brush with opacity at 27% and Flow at 36% to brush out the blown-out fire. Finally, I used a light touch of Curves to to adjust the overall color to my liking. |
