| Présentation: | I am originally from Calcutta, India. Left home in 1991 and after a long random flight through various parts of Canada and United States I somewhat settled in Ithaca, NY. I was drawn into photography about a year ago and have been trying to find my place in this enigmatic world. Although I always liked looking at photographs, I seriously started taking pictures since May,2006. I was initially shooting with a Canon Powershot S200 which is probably a museum item now. I took that camera to Brazil and India and brought back with me unscathed. Then it was stolen in a bar in San Francisco proving that developing countries do not have monopoly on scumbags. More than anything, I am a travel photographer. I am realizing more and more that my true passion is traveling and connecting with a new culture than photography per se. I am in a heightened state of awareness when I am walking in the streets of a new town and soaking up everything my immediate milieu has to offer. I am inspired and intoxicated by the cultural idiosyncrasies of the place and the people I am discovering every moment. The camera is simply a tool for me to capture those moments or visuals when the neurons in my brain fires a signal telling me that something magical is about to happen. My photography is simply a reflection of my arduous attempt at discovering something novel in the place that is singularly different from the other places I had traveled before. I have noticed that I am not inspired when I am taking pictures for the sake of photography as an art, and no matter how hard I tried I completely failed in shooting anything remotely appealing. My photography approach is closest to this quote by Martine Franck "A photograph isn't necessarily a lie, but nor is it the truth. It's more of a fleeting, subjective impression. What I most like about photography is the moment that you can't anticipate: you have to be constantly watching for it, ready to welcome the unexpected." My Gadgets: ----------- I bought my first DSLR, Canon 350D equipped with a 17-40 lens in September 06 and am having lot of fun with it. I also own a Pentax K1000 with a 50mm lens on it.
