Gil, The tallest group of hills are approx. 800 feet or so, not really all that tall. If you want more info I could get a brochure about them or you could go into the internet and type in "John Day Fossil Beds--Painted Hills Unit--Oregon Travel. Glad you liked the colors, the sky was cloudy with very few breaks. I was hoping for rain and clearing and recieved only clouds. The colors are best after rain and the sun hits their facings. This Unit is about 4 1/2 hours from Portland, so you take what you get. It's always interesting, including the Antelope, deer, and Elk that travel through the area, oh yes, the rattlesnakes, can';t forget them either. Have a great New Year..
