| Hi Way, I can understand how you might think Tibet and Mongolia have something in common, after all they do have some shared history and the Mongolian Buddhists still look to Tibet for their spiritual guidance and many worship the Dalai Lama, however for me that's about as far as the similarities go! Mongolia and Tibet are both barren places, although in different ways. If anything Mongolia is more varied and greener because it's not at the same kind of altitude and can also offer desert landscapes too. Also, despite some people imagining Tibet to be some kind of 'Shangri la' for me it never really met that description. Because of Tibet's high profile in the western media it's not very PC to say this, but the reality is it's probably the place with the highest level of crime, and the place you'll most likely be pick pocketed in China. Not to say Tibet's not a good location though, of course it's a great place to visit with a unique landscape and culture, but on the other hand in Mongolia I've found the people to be genuinely and honestly hospitable like no other country I've visited yet. In summary, whilst they might have some similarities I would say they are essentially completely different places and I would definitely recommend visiting here. Mongolia has a whole range of different ethnic minorities too which have somehow managed to survive intact over the years and I really enjoyed visiting them. You should check it out! :) All the best Lee |
