The Numbers...Nelu_Goia::2009-10-20 14:47
Hi again, Peter!
So you didn`t mind for the workshop; that`s good. I tried to be pretty subtle, to keep the mood of the original photo. I didn`t care about the small size of the photo, I think the idea of getting a correct photo is more important than that…
“Correct photo”…hmmm, what is that and why should I need one and most important, who can decide if it`s correct or not?
There is only one answer for this: the numbers! The numbers have to be correct in the first place, the numbers for the highlights, for the shadows, for the (eventual) neutrals, for the skin color, for the natural greenery, for all the things we KNOW how they should look like.
Why is that important to set those number correctly right from the beginning? For many reasons, and these are just a few:
- All third-party plugins rely on having a technically correct photo in the first place, to work with.
- All color improving “secret” recipes are based on the fact that after the “color improvement” the grey, the white and the black will stay the same and you can`t have that happening if you don`t set up these levels IN PHOTOSHOP, not in Lightroom. There is no channel-by-channel curves adjustment in Lightroom but often time the color shift changes with the luminosity so how do you fix that in Lightroom or any other raw converter?
Lightroom wonderfully complements Photoshop but in no way, shape or form is a substitute for it. I would love to be able to do at least RGB curves in Lightroom but it is not possible; maybe in the future…
About your “not looking natural” concern, here is a tip: when you work on a Photo in Lightroom create a virtual copy of it and work on the copy. When you`re done compare it with the original one (Press “C” when you are in the “Library” module). Is it better? Is it to less?
If you are in Photoshop you can do the same thing by duplicating the photo before doing anything to it.
Usually I go too far and then I reduce the opacity of the “over-the-top” version to taste, in Photoshop.
All my adjustments are parametric, so it`s just a slider away from the desired setting.
Communication, good feedback, useful critiques…you can have all these here on trekearth too, depending who your friends are…you know what I mean. I still find it useful and this is the reason I`m still here. Unfortunately my “Favorites” list is almost empty now; most of them have left already and that is sad…
You are saying:”… not to mention the steep learning curve you always put me on”…Well, Photoshop is just a tool; maybe a complicated one for some people but it`s still a tool and I think we should struggle less for the tools and more for the final goal, which is the photograph.
Adobe CS4,CS3 CS,Gimp…Canon, Nikon,high-end,low-end…Is it so important, in the end? What about Ansel Adams…?
All the best,
Nelu
