Photographer’s Note

Most theyyam ceremonies take place during the night and keep on going till the wee hours of the morning. Shrines serve as backdrop to gods, heroes and ancestors embodied by eccentric looking characters, getting in trance to the thundering beats of percussion.

To fit this impressively high headgear - at least 6 meter tall - into the frame, I had to lay down on my back with a wide angle lens, hoping for the divinity not to dance on me frenetically...
