Photographer’s Note

Dans ce décors de rêve, je regarde les femmes qui me regardent.
On pourrait les croire heureuses parce le ciel est bleu, parce que l'air est pur, et le thé magnifique.

Mais la vie est dure pour ces cueilleuses forcée.
Les salaires sont très bas parce que la mondialisation impose la compétitivité.
Les conditions de logement collectif sont inhumaines, la soutien sanitaire inexistant.

Avec AMD, nous avons entrepris la construction d'un dispensaire à Dumbara, au cœur d'une grande plantation. Nous souhaitons que les travailleuses, mais aussi leurs familles puissent s'y faire soigner.

In this landscape of dream, I look at the women who look at me.
One could believe them happy because the sky is blue, because the air is pure, and the tea fields splendids.
But life is hard for these forced workers.
The wages are very low because universalization imposes competitiveness.
Housing conditions collective are inhuman, the non-existent medical support.

With AMD, we undertook the construction of a dispensary in Dumbara, in a large plantation.
We wish that the workers, but also their families be able there to be made look after.

Bonjour Bertrand,
Un seul mot: superbe! La netteté est excellente et j'aime beaucoup la compo de la photo. La ligne formée par les plantations de thé et la position des 3 femmes à intervalle quasi régulier. Les arbres en arrière plan permettent de remplir le reste de l'image. C'est bien construit.

I wish I had something better to say than, great composition and POV. This image is so much powerful than that. There is something in the look of those women. BUt it is friday, and I'm brain dead, so the best I can do is to say AWESOME capture, Bertrand. Bien vu.

I like your deep POV for this good shot.Good diagonal of the tea plants with the women looking down and a great contrast of the tree with the sky.
I had a verry simillar view 1989 in Sri Lanka and I have seen the hard work, living conditions and medical standard.I`m happy that there are people like you who work on it.

Depuis l'europe nous pouvons aussi contribuer à l'amélioration de la qualité de vie de ces personnes en achetant des thès issus du commerce équitables. Dans les "Magasins du Monde" en ce qui concerne la Suisse. A bientôt.

I like especially the uncommon composition of this excellent picture.
The diagonal formed by the slope of the tea fields, the central placed tree and the three woman equally spread out over the slope and looking to that clever photographer.

It's a great shot - first impression is of a peaceful, almost idyllic countryside location with clear air, nice weather...of course you note explains to us that this isn't really the case & that life here is tough.

The image itself has good colours, with strong contrast between blues & greens, and is a good shot of daily life in this place.

Another great photo of the tea pickers. Great light and colour, and teriffic viewpoint catching the diagonal of the hillside. The women do not look contented with their lot despite the blue sky and the verdant green, but is this surprising?

Excellent composition with the sloping tea garden almost making a triangle. The trilogy of women are evenly spaced as if they posed (I'm sure they did not)which adds a further dimension to the image.
It reminds me of a PG Tips Tea box.

Jolie scène de travail, malgré les conditions probablement pénibles. La structure en contre-plongée est agréable. La composition bénéficie pleinement d'un magnifique arrière-plan naturel.

Ca faisait un moment que je n'étais pas venu sur TE, et c'est agréable de tomber sur des images aussi belles que celles de ta série sur les champs de thé du Sri Lanka. J'ai choisi celle-ci car c'est ma préférée tout en étant à mon avis la moins parfaite des trois. Pourquoi la moins parfaite, juste parceque l'on se prend à réver que l'arbre fut entièrement dans le cadre. Ceci dit, c'est peut-être aussi un plus qui la rend attachante, avec le regard des cueuilleuses...

Un excellent cadrage qui embrasse à la foi l'arbre et les trois cueilleuses. La pente trés prononcé de la plantation donne une grande originalité à la photo.

BOnjour Bertrand,
tu fais bien de souligner les conditions de vie difficiles, plus personne n'est dupe maintnenant, on sait que la mondialisation est une cause d'exploitation, une source même, un puits sans fond.
Il y a bien des photos qui montrent la misère et d'autres qui la laissent deviner.
On aime boire du thé, mais son gout amer n'est pas toujours dû aux feuilles qui le composent mais aussi à la douleur de ceux et celles par qui nous le buvons.
Tu sais, le café, c'est pareil, le parallelisme est frappant.

Une belle diagonale presque transversale et j'aime la présence de ce bel arbre qui coupe un peu ce bleu insolent du ciel.

It's nice to see something different to the usual tea plantation shots we see on TE, Bertrand. I like your POV and composition with the tree in the background and the strong diagonal across the frame. I think I would have preferred it if the women weren't looking at the camera, but I know how hard it is often to stop peple doing that. Cheers . . . David
