Photographer’s Note

At the gate of Ta Prohm, young kids are trying to sale postcards and other knick-knacks to incoming tourists.

This little girl was particularly wise and charming. After asking me where am I coming from, I pointed to the maple leaf on my t-shirt, as a way to challenge her.

«...Canada!» she says... « Vancouver! Toronto! Montréal! Capital Ottawa!... There’s a lot of snow in your country right now!».

You’re a smart girl, I reply... What if I’ve told you I’m coming from Australia?...

« Sydney! Melbourne! Brisbane! Capital Canberra!».

Wow! Where do you learn all these things?... « I go to school in the morning and I come here to work in the afternoon...».

OK! Now... What if I come from Djibouti?... After a couple of seconds, thinking and smiling at the same time, she offered me this answer:

«....Euh!.... I don’t know, but if you come back tomorrow, I’ll ask my teacher and I will tell you!»

Ahahahahah! Don’t worry kid, I don’t know either....

Super sympa ce portrait et son rire... elle est bien instruite dis donc! Lumiere et couleurs excellentes.. le flou au fond nous permet de ne pas trop voir les touristes!

J'adore ta note et la photo qui va avec. Lors de mes voyages j'ai souvent été impressionnée par le niveau de culture des enfants et jeunes que l'on peut rencontrer, du moins ceux qui ont la chance de pouvoir aller à l'école. Ils montrent en général une véritable soif de culture et de connaissance d'autrui qui fait parfois défaut dans notre société occidentale.
Le portrait est superbe avec une belle lumière qui illumine ce visage chaleureux et ton ouverture un peu plus grande a permis d'avoir un visage bien net partout. Une photo qui me mets de bonne humeur pour commencer ma journée (même si cela fait déjà plus de deux heures que je suis au bureau).

What a smart and cheerful smile!
What a warm portrait! You did again your best in terms of using light on the corners of a beautiful face. She twinkles with bright colors in front of her bokeh. Thanx for the story and the photo.
Alas, neither do i know the cities of Djibouti. One day i hope...

Si tu venais de Djibouti, je te dirais, Djibouti city...euh et puis c'est tout...je sais aussi que les Djiboutiens sont de grands consommateurs de qat.
Pour en revenir à la photo, je me demande bien ce que tu as raconté à cette jeune fille qui rit aux éclats :)) Son visage est bien illuminé et son grand sourire fait ressortir sa fossette.
Joli cadrage et belles couleurs.

One of your best portraits in terms of light management. It's perfect. And today I am seeing it in my LCD at home so no need of a contrast boost. ;) It's really a great portrait. The light shining in her face and shirt is really blissful. And there is still plenty of detail available in the shadows. Perfect exposure here my friend. Colors are superb and you really mastered the dof here. F/4. Perfect once again! Very good indeed...

Andre this is a very beautiful portrait of a very beautiful little girl. Her personality really shines through in this photo. The light is so nice, and the angle is perfect. I really like the depth of field. Good job using f/4 instead of f/2.8. Your story is also very nicely written. She seems very smart. This photo hopefully represents the bright future she has ahead of her.

Hi Andre,
The warm light on her face really brings out her warm smile and inner beauty and happiness. Great colours and I love your composition where you have not included the whole of her in the frame. A lovely portrait full of life!
Your note reminds me of when we were there and the people would ask where we are from, we would say South Africa, and they were very confused, South America they would say, we said no and after that they would give up and say you want to buy something! But it sounds like this girl might have known! Your portrait shows the wonderful warmth in general of the Cambodian people.

Excellent shot and great story Andre!

I had a similar experience; I had just walked out from the Elephant Terrace inside Angkor Thom, and sat down to enjoy a thirst-quenching cold coconut. This little kid who must have been about 6 years old was selling some bamboo flutes and he asked me where I came from, and I did the same- pointing at the Maple leaf on my bag. I was blown away when he said "Ah- Canada. You from Ottawa"? I could not believe my ears and asked him to repeat what he said... sure enough he said "Ottawa" with perfect pronunciation.

So it looks as though they learn it at quite an early age...

As far as the photo goes; the color is quite warm so I'm guessing this was just before sunset, sharp detail and a nice DOF.

Par contre là, tu as mon approbation totale! Ton histoire est drôle et intelligente. Quel sourire communicatif tu as su tirer de cette jeune demoiselle! Superbes couleurs et, encore une fois, un arrière-plan qui met bien en valeur la belle. Je n'ai vraiment rien à redire à ce portrait fait dans les règles de l'art. Nope, niet, nada. Ça nous donne l'envie irrésistible de partir en courant s'acheter un billet d'avion pour le Cambodge, en espérant que les habitants aient tous et toutes des sourires aussi invitant et des fossettes aussi charmantes.

J’adore ce sourire, ou plutôt ce rie spontané et communicatif. Une fois de plus, on sent à quel point ceux que tu choisis de photographier s’abandonne à toi en oubliant que tu les braques avec ta caméra, ou comme s’il te connaissait depuis toujours. Et ce magnétisme semble agir sur les gens âgés comme sur les enfants. La lumière qui dégage son visage met ses yeux en lumière de façon superbe. L’histoire que tu racontes rend cette fillette encore plus attachante. AM

ton histoire est hilarante! quelle jeune fille brillante, et quel sourire! Tes portraits sont toujours bien soignés. On dirait que tu habille ton modèle avec des couleurs bien voyantes, que tu le maquille, que tu as quelqu'un pour tenir un réflecteur sur le côté pour bien déboucher et avoir une belle lumière dans le visage...Tu en prends toujours une longue série, ou tu ne dérange pas ton modèle pour plus de 2 ou 3 clichés?
De plus, à chaque fois je cherche la focale, mais il semble que tu caches les données exif...
J'adore les photos du peuple cambodgien. Je me demandais justement s'il existait un thème, et voilà que cette photo est tombé dans les mains de cobraphil...Les expressions faciales sont toujours tellement sincères et spéciales à mes yeux.
Petit détail qui "enhance" l'image:le subtil cadre de la même couleur que son écharpe.

Je ne pouvais pas repartir sans rééquilibrée celle là aussi...pour te faire oublier "S" le sévère ;-)
En plus de ce superbe portrait au sourire radieux ta petite histoire de cette rencontre est un régal...j'ai de plus en plus souvent envie d'aborder les gens pour leur demander si je peux les prendre en photo mais je ne le fait pas...pas assez confiance en moi?...je pense que je franchirai bientôt le pas,
