Photographer’s Note

When people are being photographed, instinctively, they offer you their best smile.

Sometimes, I try to provoke it, by letting myself drop on my butts, while shooting them. It’s particularly true with children, where I can put myself at their level and make them laugh at the same time.

On other occasions, the soul leaves its hiding place and I manage to intercept their experience, their wisdom engraved on their face.

Due to members comments, concerning her "neutral" expression, I have posted a smiling version in the WS... I have so many smiling portraits in my gallery, that I thought it would be different for this time. Bad call...

beautiful portrait, andre! for all the stories the beautifully aged face tells, for that look and for the fact that she simply is and wants to be who she is - no more, no less - not over-beautified maybe by a smile she is not feeling - just be herself - as is.

Wonderful portrait. Great focus, DOF, composition, colors and details. You have wondefully captured the wisdom engraved on her face ;) I couldn't quite make what expression she has, it's almost innocent.

Bonjour, André.
Une très belle image...la femme est peut-être un peu impénétrable...mais son visage est très intéressant avec une belle texture de rides caractéristique pour les femmes de l'Asie ou de l'Inde. La composition est parfaite, la lumière et les couleurs très sensuelles. Un très beau travail.

Another great emotive portrait from you. The details are intense and I like that she is wearing the traditional head scarf. The light coming form the side is beautiful and enhances her already wonderful features. Nice tight framing and sharpness.

Again that terrible lens ;-)
You see the bokeh, how warm, smooth and natural....superb. That's why they build it, for these kind of images. 2.8 was really the minimum here, but eyes, mouth and nose are still sharp, even her wrinkels...wonderful. Really good work on this one, even betetr then yesterday's upload and much better then the ws version.
Light is great on her face...i wish i stood beside you when you took this shot, then i also had such a beauty..!!!
So far only a few reactions...people do not know what they miss when showing portraits with the ultimate lens for it...they could learn a lot..!!!

Les deux sont superbes...mais j'ai une petite préférence pour celui que tu proposes. Une petite merveille avec une sublime lumière. Et cet objectif...quel piqué....je crois que je vais jeter mon 18/55 de base à la poubelle...Allez j'admire encore une fois le travail avant de valider mon commentaire....je suis admiratif!

Quel réalisme dans ce portrait, bien servi par une très bonne réalisation technique. Comme JJ, j'ai un préférence pour celui-ci par rapport au WS.
Un beau moment de dignité.

beau portrait bien net ou la vieillesse est bien présente dans ta photo, je préféree celle ci au WS plus saturée et les rides plus marquées, beau travail

Et bien ! Je vous avouerai que je suis litteralement dingue de la netteté en photographie, alors je vous laisse imaginer l'état dans lequel je suis depuis qu'il m'a été donné l'occasion d'admirer ce portrait... Les yeux équarquillés ! Apres avoir lu les différents commentaires qui m'ont précédé il semblerait que cela soit du à cette fameuse focale 1.2... Et bien tout ce que je peux vous dire c'est que vous avez là une véritable merveille dont je ne me lasserai pas de regarder à votre place... Sur ce je vous laisse j'ai de la netteté à travailler... Merci encore...

Damn nice portrait. Very nice DOF and sharpness. It's photo's like these that you can tell when a good photographer knows technique - 1.2 lens stopping up to 2.8 but still keeping the focus point right in the middle of the subject and creating a great blurry background and super sharp photo.

I'm not sure if I like this version or the WS better. I think this one by a hair. Both are excellent. The one thing I do like, probably more than the smile, is that you captured the woman wearing the traditional white & red krama which Cambodia is famous for.

If there is one thing I could nitpick about it is the button on her sweater. It's no big deal whatsoever but I would rather see something , I don't know, I guess not so shiny.

A top notch portrait. Great work.

...no wait, I know what could have made it better - if you took it with a NIKON...

...sorry, had to do it (I'm probably gonna get it for that). Seriously though, one of the best portraits in the Cambodia section of the site. It's that good.

Je me joins au concert d’éloges que tu as reçues pour cette photo hors du commun. J’ai déjà lu sur un de tes commentaires que tu avais pour idole Steve McCurry, mais je crois que tu es sur la bonne veine pour le remplacer. Il y a une constance dans tes portraits, c’est celle de pouvoir vraiment entrer en contact avec tes sujets, d’en extraire une expression unique, d’obtenir une complicité, une confiance et çà se reflète d’une fois à l’autre, peu importe la lentille que tu choisis. Je pense exactement comme JJ Cordier qui l’a écrit avant moi et tu devrais exposer tes photos dans une galerie ou faire un livre. Si tu vivais à Vancouver, j’aurais pu t’organiser çà. Happypopeye l’a dit, c’est le portrait le plus étonnant, le meilleur du Cambodge sur TE. AM

Une photo sur laquelle on s'arrete et dont on ne decolle plus' Le pique est fantastique, les couleurs et la lumiere semblent maitrisees a un point rarement egale. Ton objectif est fantastique c'est sans aucun doute, cependant il a aussi la reputation de ne pas pardonner la moindre erreur. Et la je dois dire pas la moindre erreur, du tout bon. Allez elle va tomber dans mes favorites. Bravo!

Wow ! Quelle bonne photo !
Je suis impressionné par l'excellent piqué. Les rides, les creux, les variations légères et subtiles de la peau, le drapé du foulard.
C'est un des meilleurs portraits que j'ai vu sur TE tout simplement !

Comme je l'ecris souvent sur des portraits de gens ages, a Henk par exemple, j'apprecie beaucoup la grande dignite qui s'en degage et que je retrouve dans ton image. Bien sur elle est quand meme un peu figee dans l'expression la dame, par contre il y a une illumination subtile du visage qui fait bien ressortir ses traits de l'environnement un peu sombre et qui procure une bonne sensation de relief, on pourrait la toucher !
