Beware: Dangerous Swan on Duty Photo

Photographer’s Note

Since I've been attacked by this cobra (this is where my nickname come from...), I tend to use telephoto lenses when shooting vicious animals, rather than putting myself in danger... :-P)

But in this case, I thought a swan would be gentle and wouldn't represent a threat... Well, I was totally wrong and eventually, this horrible beast was trying to feed on my right ear, while I was laying flat on my chest to shoot the scene...

The building you can see behind is the Beguinage, a collection of small buildings used by Beguines, a sisterhood of religious women who sought to serve God without retiring from the world.

I suspect that they trained these swans for their own protection, like if they were pitbulls... Grrrr!

Hello Andre,

I never thought beautiful birds like a swan could be dangerous. A lesson learned. Good work with this image. The swan is properly in focus white the soft background doen not distract attention from the bird. Good colours and framing. Cheers :-)

Here I like especially this wonderful light and the beautiful buildup of the photo. The a bit blurred background emphasizes the "main character" in a skillful way. I like this one very much - and the note too ;-)

Bonjour, André. Tu devrais peut-être suivre un stage de dressage chez Bouglione avant de continuer de risquer ta vie à photographier les animaux. Ici, on perçoit déjà l'attaque dans le regard du cygne ;o). Les cygnes brugeois sont très susceptibles. Demande aux chevaliers français ce qu'ils en ont pensé juste avant et pendant la bataille des Eperons d'Or. En tout cas, j'aime bien ton cadrage décentré et le léger flou sur l'entrée du Béguinage. La prochaine fois que tu t'approches d'un cygne à Bruges - si tu t'y risques encore - dis-lui 'Schild en vriend' avec l'accent et il te foutra la paix.

Ça fait un moment que je n'ai pas regardé ta galerie et je vois que tu as vécu des moments forts et au péril de ta vie :))
D'abord par un cobra (je pensais que les charmeurs de serpent enlevaient les dents et le venin, mais peut être pas toujours) puis le cygne...qui sur cette photo semble pourtant si paisible.
Moi même, je me suis fait attaquer, il y a des années , par un troupeau d'oies à Bali ! et je peux te dire que ce sont de très bonnes gardiennes ;)
J'aime bien la luminosité et le flouté du BG qui fait bien ressortir "l'horrible bête!"
J'en profite pour te souhaiter une très bonne année!

Hello André,

Ce cygne est bien mis en évidence tout en gardant une vue floue mais visible de l'arrière plan !
Je ne connaissais pas ton histoire de piqure de cobra ! Très impressionnant ! Pour cette image, tu as bien fait de t'éloigner de cette bête sauvage !! On ne sais jamais ! ;-)

Photo prise au péril de ta vie, elle n'en prend que plus de valeur!. J'aime beaucoup l'arrière plan, en général, soit il est trop flou pour qu'on y voit quelque chose, soit il n'est pas interessant, mais là il est très beau! Quant à la bête fauve, tu as eu raison de t'éloigner, rien de plus vicieux qu'un cygne à la sieste, prêt à bondir...

Photographe c'est super sportif et dangereux comme loisir, je comprends mieux ton côté "risque-tout" Dr Jones. :)

Great note, i've never seen the cobra picture before...you daredevil ;-)
Light is not at his best here, but at least you made a nice composition from it with the overhanging tree as natural framing and the swan sitting in a kind of poase...

Je comprends que l'animal t'aies rappelé des souvenirs cuisants ...la forme de son cou ressemble à celle du cobra. Ceci dit, ces cygnes de Bruges, bien que parqués, ne m'ont pas paru aussi agressifs que ça lors de mon passage.....

Hello Andre,
Your story about the cobra was terrifying. I would have had a heart attack for sure! Swans and geese look peaceful enough, but they are some of the orneriest creatures around. I have read that they are sometimes used to guard military bases. They are so grumpy that the least sound will set them into a frenzy alerting the security guards. I especially avoid these creatures when they have young ones around. Excellent photo, especially with the harsh lighting. Great work!

Je continue le récit de tes palpitantes aventures. Très intéressante celle-ci et cette fois le cygne est très bien placé. Les couleurs sont excellentes et la composition aussi. Je pense qu'avec une vitesse plus lente de 1/125 par exemple, tu aurais pu avoir le cygne net ainsi que le Béguinage en fond.
Et si tu as le gout du risque, je peux te renseigner une oie très agressive en Belgique et en Grèce un ânon qui rue comme un diable! (Ma jambe s'en souvient encore...). Les risques du métier, donc.
