Photographer’s Note

Friday fun...

On my previous The Inaccessible Säntis photo, Josep mentionned the "ferocious cows" did not actually look like so terrible, at least compared to the Spanish bulls... Well possibly with this one he might change his mind, you better not upset that one further Josep, you better not ;-))

Beside dedicating this friendly cow to Josep, this photo is the third in these Seealpsee series and I'd like to dedicate them to Norbert for their technical part:

Moi ce que j'aimerais voir c'est la photo de ce qui s'est passé ensuite... on a vraiment l'impression qu'elle te fonce dessus! T'avais lâché les CT à ses trousses pour faire la photo? ;o)
Bon, OK, c'est au 200mm donc tu devais encore avoir de la marge pour faire la photo et partir en courant ensuite. Beau portrait en tout cas le Miss 9899 dans son champ de fleurs avec un double bokeh. Et bravo d'avoir relevé le défi que t'avais lancl notre ami Norbert.

Olá Jean Yves,
Even with the 200mm, I think that you are too close to this beast! I would be afraid, that's for sure and "he" doesn't look friendly at all. I love the result, with the narrow dof and perfectly focused on the "bull". The yellow/green tones of the BG make a great contrast with the brown (an inspiring image for my paintings...)

J’aime bien ce piqué et ce bokeh !
Elle était prête à chargée la pauvre !
Elle s’est pas ramassé un coup de tromblon dans les tétines au moins la pauvre petite !

Hi Jean-Yves,
She really looks mean with head down, forward moving and ears in asymmetric position. Yellow flowers make a great background carpet.
I just wish the Swiss would use their freedom from EU for not using those ear badges.
Nearest, most out-of-focus flowers could be cropped off.
(I also have some cows in the pipeline.)

Pas terrible ton Murmelilens, parce que ton objectif déforme vraiment fort cette marmotte, elle me fait plutôt penser à une vache...

Cette vache est superbe, bien propre et encore avec des cornes, bref une vrai star.
Avec ton zoom et la faible profondeur de champs tu nous en fait un beau portrait très glamour.
C'est superbe de champs de p'tites fleurs jaunes.

I like the vertical format of this shot and think that the bokeh works well. What I don't like so much is that the right side of the ferocious beast is obscured in shadow, but then at 200mm, there's little that you could do about that I suppose!

This is very good! The use of shallow DoF to blur both fore- and background makes the cow's head stand out. The horns are really scaring!;) I like how the yellow nimber in her ear fits the colour of the flowers.

Nice close-up of this beast, although I agree with those who warn you about getting too close! Those horns look very sharp, and they have a devilish curl to them - look out indeed!

Wow ! Évidemment, avec cette photo je dois te donner la raison et suis d'accord avec toi dans la férocité de la vache. Il est démontré qui cette vache a de l'humeur très mauvaise quand tu envahiras son intimité. Je suppose que tu utiliserais un haut zoom, un 200 ou plus, pour germer et sortir ensuite en courant de là.
Bien recueilli le mouvement, j'aime le résultat que tu as obtenu dans ta photo, avec très peu de profondeur de domaine pour rehausser encore plus à ta vache.
Il paraît presqu'un «encierro» des Sanfermines de Pamplona, mais en version champêtre et alpine.
Très sympa.

Quelle netteté et quelle DOF !
Dis, c'est elle qui a sifflé tout le vin ?
Superbes couleurs et la netteté là où il faut et pas ailleurs.

Salut Jean-Yves. A very pleasant and refreshing shot of this "encounter", where the 200 mm gave you not only the benefit of a safe-enough distance but also a nice result with the DOF. The idyllic carpet of yellow flowers makes a fun contrast to the somewhat serious expression of bull #9899, LOL.

Okay, maybe in the future I will specify a more urban-oriented challenge, but until then: well done on this one :)

My current worry is how to carry my photo equipment to Tokyo in November as I'll again fly through Heathrow. Of course it's still 3 months and restrictions may be lifted until then - otherwise I may need to revert to shipping it via DHL or the like, as putting the gear into the checked baggage that I'm not even allowed to lock is not something I want to pursue.

Anyways ... have a nice weekend.

Hi Jean-yves, nice shot with good details and colours, the shadows are a bit extreme through maybe changing your POV would have helped on this occassion.I like the field of flowers, well done and TFS.

Y a de la puissance dans le bovidée (cependant il n'a pas l'air méchant), ce sont le cadrage et le format... L'appenzel recele des trésors, bonnes couleurs et profondeur. Qualité super.

Il valait mieux d'utiliser le 200mm pour affronter ce solide gaillard qui n'a pas l'air d'être bien docile.
Belle profondeur de champ et magnifique netteté sur ce bovin.
Dans un autre régistre,quel est ton impression du sigma 70-200,le pour et le contre d'un utilisateur,car je regarde de ce coté de zoom.

A superb capture of this impressive bull, who certainly appears to have the ability to intimidate any human. Having been chased by bulls while on long distance walking, I can recognize the fire in his eyes...The POV is ideal and the colourful foreground really contrasts well with the bull. The clarity is such that one can even discern the wetness on his nose. A very fine shot, JY.

Waou je suis bluffé par le résultat que tu obtients avec ce 70-200 2.8, c'est assez bourrin comme résultat, techniquement extremement bien géré avec cette zone nette toute petite, blurrant l'avant et arrière plan, à 200mm, c'est parfaitement net, les couleurs sont si naturelles et bien figées
Une très belle photo
A 200mm a St Malo, avec un vent a décorner les taureaux j'peux te dire que c'est pas évident d'avoir autant de netteté ;) ... bon avec l'alcool c'est clair que le vent souffle toujours plus fort

Oh! Une sympathique vache courant dans un champ de minuscules fleurs jaunes! C'est booooooo! Sincèrement, Cousin Terror, c'est l'un des plus beaux portraits de vache qu'il m'ait été donné de voir sur TE. Le foyer est extrêmement précis et la vache est parfaitement nette. Le pelage est lustré juste ce qu'il faut (pas de surex) et sa tête est bien placée, les cornes bien visibles. Définitivement, tu sais placer tes sujets! ;) C'est vraiment du beau travail Jean-Yves!
Ça m'étonne qu'avec le grand nombre de critiques que tu as reçu, personne ne semble t'avoir fait remarquer que ton deuxième lien (à 144 mm) est le même que le premier (à 70 mm) et renvoit donc à la mauvaise photo. Suis-je la seule à lire les notes? Ça doit être pour ça que je suis lente! ;)

Also ich muss schon sagen, meine Toggenburger Kuehe sind viel viel lieber, die stehen nur herum und staunen mich an :))) Oder Du hast das arme Tier so aufgebracht, dass sie einfach nicht mehr anders konnte ...
