Photographer’s Note

Dongguan is a city in the southern Guangdong province, close to Guangzhou. As many cities of this area it has expanded considerably in recent years, leading to the need of building housings in amounts probably seen nowhere else in the world.

Passing in the outskirts of this city on the road to Guangzhou, I was amazed to see these houses apparently freshly built and as it seemed yet not populated, which could be explained by the fact the road leading to them had not been completed in time, apparently the housing building teams had done their job faster than the road team.

Taken from a moving bus using the pola to minimize window reflections.

Salut Jean-Yves,

Lorsque je suis passé à Guangzhou en 1993, il n’y avait que des rizières le long du chemin de fer, ponctuées à toutes les heures par des villes champignons, constituées d’une usine autour de laquelle étaient greffées des tours d’habitation modestes.

Aujourd’hui, ce que ta photo nous démontre, c’est l’essor vertigineux qui semble affecté la Chine, même dans les régions agricoles.

Je constate que tes bagages ne t’ont pas permis d’apporter ton légendaire ciel bleu, mais qu’à cela ne tienne, je ne vois pas dans cette photo une recherche esthétique mais plutôt le partage d’un phénomène social bouleversant.

On ressent bien la vitesse d expansion et de construction des villes chinoise, avec la route encore inachevée... Belles tonalites dans les couleurs ...bon cadrage!

Hi Jean-Yves,
Heavy building masses and unfinished road reminds of Soviet Union, although architecture is clearly more imaginative. Being closer to the worker and truck would be nice, but not possible this time. You managed to get a lot of features to the cloudy sky.

I'm sure there is lots of development in China at the moment and your photo epitomises that. Remarkable for being taken through the bus window. That's a very straight road they are making and the buildings look more like hotels. Interesting and imformative shot.

des travaux en chine, preuve de l'essor de ce pays, l'architecture moderne conserve tout de meme un style de l'ancien, on le voit ici sur les batiments rose, et je trouve qu'il n'y a pas trop de travailleur sur le chantier, car sur les routes, un travail que l'on fait avec un engin, chez eux ils utilisent 10 personnes a la place, tu comprend pourquoi il n'y a pas beaucoup de chomage chez eux.

Vue très interessante de ces travaux qui ont l'air énormes. J'aime beaucoup la silhouette du personnage sur fond clair qui donne une idée de la taille des lieux.

Hi Jean! It's amazing how they go on building so many structures in China! Very good sharpness, considering this was taken from a bus. Good lighting and contarst between the soil and the color of the buildings. rgds.

Hi JY, interesting that you have captured this image from a moving bus. Reminds me a bit of some unfinished road that we have here in Cpt. Good depth of colour with the background building complimenting the mood.

Hi Jean-Yves. Without the truck and person the shot wouldn't be nearly as good as it would feel a bit empty. I might be tempted to take the contrast up just to see what would happen. tfs JY!

Salut Jean Yves, chouette jeu avec les diagonales fait avec la route et les bâtiments, sympa d'avoir cet esseulé là au milieu... T'es content de ce 18-200, je l'ai vendu cette semaine, je le trouvais un poil soft si les conditions n'étaient pas extra ?

The angle at which you have captured this makes the buildings appear to have faces, like a little family peering out over the flat red "bricks" below. Amazing results for the conditions of being on a moving bus!

Hi Jean-Yves,
This is an excellent documentary picture - showing real and important history. Perhaps 20 years ago, there aren't a single building in China as tall as that; and it's for certain that this land was nothing more than wasteland or farms back in the 1990s.
Like the little man there - looks as if like he's the architect of the place.

Good capture of this Portuguese problem. Yes, here we are also experts in coordination. We teached the Chinese during the five centuries of Portuguese presence in Macau :-/
Beautiful mix of colours. I think that the sky is ok; it is contrasting with the colorful buildings and road.
