Le phare des baleines est situé sur la commune de Saint-Clément-des-Baleines,à la pointe Ouest de l'île de Ré. De nombreux échouages de baleines ont eu lieu par le passé, d'où le nom du phare. On accéde au sommet, à 57 m, par un escalier hélicoïdal de 257 marches. L'ascension est impressionnante.
Le phare, classé monument historique en 1999, est visitable et fonctionne encore, son feu a une portée de 39 kilomètres.
Construit à partir de 1849, il a remplacé en 1854 une tour, la Tour des Baleines de 21 mètres construite en 1682 sur les ordres de Vauban et qui subsiste au nord du phare.

Saint-Clément-des-Baleines est une commune française, située sur l'Île de Ré, département de la Charente-Maritime, région Poitou-Charentes, peuplée de 728 Villageois et Villageoises, répartis sur 7 km², soit 107 hab/km².
Son nom vient des nombreux échouages de cétacés sur ses plages jusqu’au début du XXe siècle.
Restes importants de blockhaus du Mur de l'Atlantique, datant de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Certaines scènes du film "Le jour le plus long" furent tournées sur la plage Nord.

The staircase is beautiful in itself, but you made a very nice and geometrical composition, very clean, well framed.
A possible alternative is to include some human figure somewhere in the staircase (but not too close to the camera, to my taste) to break the symmetry of the picture.

Salut Joël,
what a strange and pleasant snail. Excellent managed upview with a great effect. Good light and without explanation I think it would have been a puzzle to check what it is. I like the good sharpness and contrasts till the top.

je trouve cette photo fabuleuse!L'angle de vue est superbe,et parmi les 3 ,je pense que c'est celle que j'aurais choisi!Le graphisme est magnifique,et ce que j'aime par dessus tout,ce sont les barres mmétaliques vues du dessous,ellles sont comme des colliers de perles,c'est superbe!J'adore!

Alors ça c'es fantastique, quel effet, quelle recherche de cadrage, vraiment une belle réussite, tu aurais pu poster le 3 images sans problème.
Cet escalier j'y monterai bien, quel constaste dans l'arrondi entre l'escalier et le pierre extérieur, superbe.

I've always liked spiral staircases, and I love the composition, the way the eye is drawn from the bottom left to the upper ceiling. Great picture, just breathtaking. And I love how the pale color of the railing just appears at higher levels. Bravissimo.

I don't know which is more impressive, the outside view or the inside view shown here. This shot has great dof and it must need it because of the height of the light. The lighting is very nice and the detail is fantastic. Great capture.

Hello Joel,

This photo is spectacular, and it was pointed out to me by my good friend Stella Marinazzo (meltemi). Whenever you look up from the bottom, or from down from the top of a circular staircase, the shape resembles the beautiful mathematical shape called the "logarithmic spiral." In my book, 'Math and the Mona Lisa' I had touched upon this subject, since it was one of Leonardo's discoveries. Nature prefers this spiral over others, such as the Archimedian Spiral, or the hyperbolic spiral...

The note is very comprehensive. I am grateful to Stella for pointing it out, and to you especially for letting us all enjoy the scene vicariously.
