I wondered in my diary from 1976 why the Dutch didn't create anything nicer, like the British and French colonial powers did here and there. The canals of central Jakarta weren't enough to create a Dutch atmosphere. But in 1999 I made a short excursion from the present central areas to old Batavia and found a very small copy of Amsterdam (no offense to Amsterdam intended). But it's really like a kind of museum area and didn't change my impression of modern Jakarta as a kind of urban hell on earth.
