You are right the DOF could be better. The shot is too soft.
Ususally I don't shot Macro so maybe after some more practice the results will be better

What I challenge is why a close-up of stranger in India is encouraged while a close-up of a colorful friend is discouraged....

I got the filters and wanted to test them. When the weather will be better, plan to get some waterfalls, rivers, rocks in the ocean with long exposures.
