With digital cameras it is generally best to expose as bright as possible. Use the histogram on the viewer of if you camera has highlight warnings use this to get the picture as brightly exposed as...

Extinct! that is what they said about the Westman Isles! there is quite a good view from the top as well, but I have never been into the crater.
