Thanks for your reply - sorry I didn't see it sooner.

That's pretty clever - stalking people while pretending to photograph the ducks and not them. A cunning ruse.

I should have thought that an "ornithological hat" was one which sported colourful feathers around the brim - but photographing birds while wearing one of those would be a bit like visiting a sick relative while wearing black and with a tape measure dangling around your neck!
