Now that you mention it, Russ, Stephens wrote, "and the whole, loaded as it is with ornament, conveys the idea of vastness and magnificence rather than that of taste and refinement".

A very curious opinion -- not tasteful, not refined, but vast and magnificent. Interesting! I have an old two-volume paperback edition of Stephens' "Incidents of Travels in Yucatan." I'll pull it down and read it some day!
