Hello Mat,
Thank you for your nice critique.
One single reason to have a wide aperture is to have the foreground blurred. If you look at the surface of the water on the foreground, you will see that the focus was done in the far distance and that the sea is slightly blurred. I think it gives a better depth impression than if I had used a closed aperture like 11 I'm often using.

For a first time (i suppose) i called You Gary, Christian. It might sound rudely, please excuse me, it was absolutely not my intention, i must be tired.. Hope You don't mind.

Thanks for reply. Yes, i see the blurred forground and it's inspiring to go for that blur while shooting seascapes. I'm simply not used to the seaside sceneries - that's probably the reason why i asked.

No problem at all for the first name !o) I'm quite used to it !
Hope to have given you ideas, it is sometimes nice to blur the foreground !
