this devotion to Mary is ancient in Portugal and Brazil. the complete name of the church is OUR LADY OF GOOD DEATH, in some aspects it was usual to pray for Mary to give them a not long and painful death, as was usual in the old times, and even today,even with the best medical cares we have. jorge take care
