Hello Will,
This is a rather funny shot, looking like from a movie. I wonder by whom. Could Fellini have made a satire of upper class people being uncomfortable in the modern democratic society? Doesn't the white haired lady look a bit like Mastroianni with a wig and a lot of makeup?

I'm afraid I have no idea what the men in the foreground were selling. Could it be some kind of dried fruit? It doesn't look like meat.

No, I did not go to Maiduguri. In Nigeria I have only been to Lagos. I am sure Maiduguri was a sleepy provincial town in the 80's. Now it is probably one of the most unsuitable tourist destinations in the world because of the Boko Haram. The entire Sahel region was a haven of peace and tranquillity (and extreme poverty) a few decades ago, now it is one large "no-go-zone".
