Photographer's Note

This shot was made in the Samburu National park in the Rift Valley north of the Kenya mount. Surprisingly, the weather was really nice since we are about 1600m high : hot during the day, cool at night.

That reserve did represent a nice contrast compared to Amboseli we just came from. Amboseli is a hot flat large sunburnt area, white skied, displaying the Kilimandjaro in the background whereas Samburu looks like a narrow wooded park following different rivers and displaying nice green hills everywhere against a blue sky.

Samburu is the kingdom of Red Elephants. In some parts of the park, you feel you are surrounded by Red Elephants emerging from a green ocean. At sunset, the show is spectacular. Hundreds of Elephants are leaving the red mud of the river to walk towards the green woods and it does create an amazing contrast. Thanks to the hills and the thick woods, they may surround you really quickly and the ranger has to be very careful especially when baby elephants are around.

This elephants was passing really close from us, standing between our car and a baby elephant as a "blocker" according to what the ranger told us. It means it stood there on purpose to protect the baby elephant from any potential danger coming from us. At that moment, there were probably 50 elephants all around us. It was a fantastic moment.
