Photographer's Note

I'm going to post a few photos of Liberia showing the effects of the civil war. I returned to Liberia in 2004 during a period of peace. The civil war affected every part of the country. My photos show the destructive effects on buildings and infrastructure. Of course the effects on the Liberian people are just as great.

In 1975 when I lived in Tapeta this area was the center of town and had triving businesses in all the buildings shown. I returned in 1997 after the first period of fighting and the buildings were in good shape but vacant. In 2004 the buildings were destroyed. People have vacated much of this part of the country because there are few schools and health facilities. Most towns in Nimba County have this type of damage.
