Photographer's Note

"Mukurob", in the Nama language, means "Finger of God". An erosion remnant standing 34 Metres above the surrounding plain, the column of sandstone was precariously balanced on a thin neck of brittle and softer shale. On 4 December 1988 there was an unusually strong wind and this famous landmark collapsed. Was it co-incidence that it happened one day after a strong earthquake occurred in Russia which may, by vibrations too subtle to be sensed by humans, have further weakened the middle section of this inverted pendulum? Whatever, once again another stride was taken along Nature's course towards equilibrium and gravity prevailed as the main mechanism of the moment.
