The steppe eagle, Aquila nipalensis, is a large bird of prey (wing spread up to 8 feet) specializing on ground squirrels and other small mammals. It undertakes massive migration from its breeding range en masse past major flyways of the Middle East, Red Sea, the Himalayas, Mongolia, China, etc. It overwinters in East and Southern Africa primarily. The steppe eagle appears on the flag of Kazakhstan and is the national bird of Egypt. The species is considered endangered by the IUCN.
