Photographer's Note
This is my auntie, Apondak. She is a Dinka. She is always friendly and cares about people a lot and is always helping people. If you visit her she will be so glad to see you, she will hug you and kiss you. She is really poor. She was wearing an old torn dress so I bought her this blue dress in Rumbeck. When I came to America in 2001 I sent her my first paycheck. Apondak means _____. In the Dinka culture, girls are named after the color of the cow that is presented (sacrificed?) at her birth. All the names begin with the letter A.

Wow! Just been looking at all your photos and your intro. You have quite a story. What an amazing time this must have been for you, I can't even begin to imagine. This portrait is very nice. The blue dress works well with the photo but I feel inadequate even saying that.
