Queue for "Lion King", a photo from Mara, Ouest

Photographer's Note

A large family of elephants are slowly proceeding in a queue for "Lion King", now (and always) playing at Serengeti Theaters.

After a long, bumpy and dusty drive, we arrived at Serengeti Park. I had my wide angle on the cam, still shooting the landscape. Suddenly we ran into these giants, apparently enjoying a large family after a fertile spring. The procession was an amazing welcome to the endless plains of the famous conservation area. Then i changed to 70-300 mm. Sorry for the harsh counter-light, i told them to move to the other side of the road, but they didn't care at all.

ps: category selection was difficult. ok, it is a daily life shot, as well as a food photo for some and transportation photo for some others.

Hello Deniz,
"Ceremony" was another good choice for category. This is a lovely shot. I saw a lot of elephants in Tanzania but never lined up as nicely as this, with two or three generations going for a walk together. This is everybody's fantasy of Africa, well converted to B&W like in the good old days of books on exotic journeys. The clouds aren't bad either.

Your B&W shot works very well at conveying the atmosphere and thrill of seeing a parade of elephants Deniz. Seeing them strung out like this always reminds me of the elephant parade in Jungle Book http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrQQZuLru9s (have a look).

Nothing wrong with the light as the silhouetted elephants are beautifully captured against a lovely sky.

I can imagine how vivid and colorful this scene must have been in real(probably most of us couldn´t resist post it in color),but I have to say sometimes B&W can be even more expressive medium.Like in this case(at least for me).Superb light and contrast.The silhouettes of elephants look magnificent across the whole scene!

Hi Deniz, Wonderful shot and interesting choice of black and white. They look quite strange so black. Fantastic scene under very nice clouds. I saw many elephants in Botswana and Namibia. It was always great experience.

Elephants are amazing. They seem to be so social and kind to each other. I really like this line of adults and children, all making their way across the plains together. The silhouettes against the cloudy sky are beautiful, almost poetic in a way. I think the horizontal framing also accentuates the line that the elephants have formed.

Beautiful shot, Deniz - I see we both took some time off TE, but you certainly went to a nicer location - Tanzania for you, Delaware for me!

The light is outstanding here, with the elephants presented in silhouette in the open expanse of the Serengeti. The slight vignetting gives the center of the shot some wonderful brightness as well, emphasizing the large elephant at center. Beautifully done, and a great choice in B&W. Thanks!

a dreamy composition here. Like the treatment in monochrome. The row of elephants is really worth seeing against such beautiful texture of sky at background. A great panorama. Well done. Tfs.

This is a very successful b/w shot, in which you've concentrated on keeping the detail in the highlights - the clouds. The elephants look great spread across the scene in silhouette, and the horizon is well placed in the panoramic composition. Excellent photographic work and a very good note.

Great title, that made me laugh! The Lion King was on in Dublin recently, and I pictured this line of elephants queing on the street :)

Love the silhouette effect you captured here, I think part thanks for that wonderful strong backlight. The clouds combined with the subject make this a really nice photo, and black and white is a brilliant choice.

what's not to like here! everything has been totally set up perfectly...the clouds, the long line of elephants, the silhouettes, and the grassy plains...the only thing missing here is a double rainbow in the bg! haha

A great sight of the silhouettes of these elephants, all beautifully on a line, in the seemingly endless space of Serengeti.

lovely interpretation of a shot of wild life, I like the long cut and the framing, but especially the silhouettes of elephants and their context, including the sky, perfect management of the light, I do not see the burned areas even in the clouds at the top....
for me is not to much the back light...is well done...

This looks Ooooh in B&W! I admired for quite a while the tonalities of grey which is present in the frame, which acually makes the picture for me. Of course the silhouette of the pachyderms slowly trudging across the grasslands should have been an amazing view to see with own eyes!

Ah, this bring back so much wonderful memories of my time there. Makes me go back to look at my own photos from here, perhaps I should post some for sentimental reason.

Anyway, this is a really cool shot with the wide open plain and the big sky as the herd of elephants strolling through. Incredible scene and you captured it beautifully. I like the b&w presentation. but I'm sure colors looks even better.

A fantastic shot of elephants in Serengeti plains, different generations are there, babies, young and adult elephants, clever b&w version, only the animal's silouhette are visible, heavy clouds in the bg, all the best, take care, have a nice day
