The bowsprit of a sailing vessel is a pole (or spar) extending forward from the vessel's prow. It provides an anchor point for the forestay(s), allowing the fore-mast to be stepped farther forward on the hull.

Early ocean-going vessels tended to tilt the bowsprit, known in centuries past also as a boltsprit, at a high angle, and hung one or two square spritsails from yards. In the 17th century and early 18th century a vertical sprit topmast was added near the end of the bowsprit and another square sail added to it; this was not a particularly successful design however, the mast tending to carry away in heavy weather. Fore-and-aft sails known as jibs hung from the stays proved more useful for speed and maneuvering, and the basic bowsprit was lengthened with a jibboom and then even further with a flying jibboom, resulting in bowsprits of tremendous length, up to 30 metres total.

Hi Gianfranco,
the view of the colourful flags in the center of the shot, hanging from the mast of the ship contrast,perfect with the blue of the sky.The brilliant light enhance the colours with the clarity of the image to be superb.

Congratulations for your 500th picture on TE.
I feel my backwards to the navy as 50 year ago, when I see the flag and the bow of the ship.
Nice depth and perspective picture.

per te amante del mare e delle barche deve essere un piacere scattare e poi elaborare immagini del genere.

Gira gira, tutti siamo attratti dalle stesse cose. In questo caso dalla prua della "Cuauhtemoc".
A dir la verità, questa fotografia sembra la fotocopia di una fatta da me il giorno prima, quindi mi astengo dall'esprimere troppo sperticati elogi per non correre il rischio di autoelogiarmi indirettamente...
