Subaim, Taste of Java in East Halmahera
Subaim Wasile - East Halmahera
Subaim is a transmigration region in East Halmahera. Starting as Government's Project in the early of 80s, people from
Central & East Java and Madura started to farm here. And it's quite successfull now.
Spots for Photography :
- Ricefields in SP2 and SP1
- Gunung Wato Wato
- Tujuh Bidadari / Tujuh Rupa waterfalls in SP1
- Reservoirs in SP1 and SP6 (which i didn't go)
- Rivers in SP1 and SP4 (which i didn't go)
How do i get here?
I am now live in Ternate. So, here are the steps :
- Kotabaru speedboat port to Sofifi : small speedboat, Rp. 50.000 each person. 1 hour only.
- Sofifi to Subaim : by car, known as oto pangkalan / local taxi, Rp. 175.000 each person (choose car like mitsubishi strada,
or fortuner for more convenient, cause the road is poor). 4-5 hours if not raining.
Place to stay and to eat?
I stayed at LESTARI inn in SP1 (Rp. 100.000 per night).
There are few numbers of restaurant (warung) here, with taste of real javanese food such as Lalapan Ayam (around Rp. 20.000),
Sate Ayam/Kambing (around Rp.12.000), Gado-gado (around Rp. 7.000).
Bakso "Pak Dakun" in SP1 is recommended!
Transportation in Subaim?
You can always take Ojek. But i prefer to rent a motorcycle, because i was with friend. It's around Rp. 75.000 per day.
How do i get back to Ternate?
Normally, you can do just the opposite way you get here. But, i was trying different way. here are the steps :
- Subaim port to Tobelo : Ferry, leaving at 11pm arriving at 6am, Rp. 15.000 each person
- Tobelo to Sofifi : by car, Rp. 175.000 each person, 4 hours long.
- Sofifi - Ternate : small speedboat, Rp. 50.000 each person. 1 hour only.
SP : Sentra Pemukiman
have a nice travelling :)

Assalamualaikum Ali,
Yes, Indeed, we won't see many rice fields in North Mollucas, It's so Javanesse. Your landscape composition always fascinate me, especially those in Ternate theme / album. I like the contrast, exposure, vibrant colors on most of your pictures. Actually, I find TE Forum unintentionally by looking on your Gallery here and I feel so proud of my beautiful homeland, Ternate.
I've never been to East Halmahera before, but I've visited North Halmahera, Galela & Tobelo in 2003. There are beatiful scuba spots, beatiful landscape /seascape as well. I hope someday "Kitorang bisa bakudapa". Thanks for share.
Best Regards, Khalid
