Photographer's Note

Victoria has been facing days of danger and devastation as about seventy grass fires and forest fires burned in the countryside and national parks. Only today a cool change has arrived and many of the fires are being controlled.
For the last three days Melbourne was under a thick cover of smoke and the sun looked like a red balloon in the late hours of the day.Yesterday the smoke reached even the Dandenong hills which are to the south-east of Melbourne, yet the largest fires were north of the city.
In the photo you can see the smoky sky and the haze from the fires that hit country Victoria.

The fires were hundreds of kilometres from the township of Ballan, but the smoke was everywhere as fires destroyed distant homesteads, killed livestock and caused towns to be evacuated.

You can see how dry the countryside is as we haven't had rain for weeks and the days have been very hot, the wind dry and scorching at times.
