Photographer's Note
last year i took a photo similar to this one. you can find it here.
this year, i used my nikon, instead of my old handheld. but unfortunately, the results were not as good as i'd hoped. maybe i rushed a little too much or maybe i just don't have the skills to pay the bills ;)
this is from brisbane's buddha birthday festival, 2007. it was held at the southbank parklands and had music, religious ceremonies, meditation lessons, art exhibits and so much more. i think it was bigger than last year but still just as exciting.

Very good contrast of lamps against the sky. The diagonal line is very interesting according to me and red balloons capture my eyes.

Hello Craig,
I like the diagonal positioning of the wire and the lamps stand out beautifully against the sky. Good exposure management resulting in strong colours.

Nice color and contrast! I like the simplicity of the shot and the diagonal line of the lanterns.

Hi Craig,
Nice, simple, clean picture. And I'm always in for diagonals. Very pleasing! I think it's better than your last year's shot. It is so much better balanced! Not that 'in your face'. It's subtle. I like it!

Beautiful simplicity. COlros are great. I kind of wonder what it would look like with the lanterns in the upper part of the frame as compared to the bottom. Eather way, it's a nice capture.

Hello Craig,
Your image shows me the ever-blue Brisbane sky. How I wish it was grey~! It is getting to the point where big trees around the city are keeling over and streams and creeks are running on empty, a sight I have never seen in this region before! The blazing sun is well masked by the upper lantern, making it a feature of its own, highlighting the vivid colours of the orb-like lantern. Your fame helps to add formality and structure to the image. Excellent clarity and saturation levels. I wonder what the dark spot in the top corner is? A mark on the lens, or a spy satellite? Ha ha.
Well done.

great shot ... simple colours and strong lines. not as good as your first one, to be fair ... but this works for me.
btw, top right corner ... you need to clean your gear! :)

Hi Craig,
Sometimes keeping it simple is best way to compose your subject. You certainly achieved that in this composition. Good color quality and clarity ... well composed. Excellent work! tfs

Hi Craig
Good pov and nice blue bg with the saturated red lanterns. They were everywhere here in Seoul. You played with some tricky lighting. Very sharp. Well done.

Hi Craig,
I think I'm with Dennis here. While the sky has more blue in last year's photo, I prefer the whisp of cloud in this year's photo. I also prefer the less crowded feel of 2 laterns as compared to 4 lanterns although I think 3 is themagic number. I love brisbane and the Sunshine coast so it pleases me to write a critique of a photo from Brisbane. HLJ, Pat

Hi craig,
Beautiful light and composition. The simplicity of the foto is what attracts me the most. It looks like the sun was made just to light this lantern.

Don't be so hard on yourself Craig, I think that you have more than enough "skills to pay the bills" lol I think sometimes, as I also found out this year, that some days you either have it or ya don't. For annual events like Buddha's birthday it sometimes is just tragic that one doesn't have enough time to do a reshoot. I guess that is just life though. Personally I like this shot for the simple fact that you put the lanterns again the blue sky, looks quite nice.

I think this is a very nice shot. It's got simplicity and I think that's what you were going for here. I looked at your previous shot and that one's nice as well. U got the blue sky, u got the white clouds n u got the lanterns hanging by theselves. Good composition.
