Holy Mary of Obidos, a photo from Leiria, Nord

Photographer's Note

Parish Church, located in the plaza of the same name, is the main temple of Obidos. Although the tradition traces its foundation to make the Visigothic period, converted into a mosque in the holy Muslim period and again by D. Afonso Henriques soon after the conquest of the Village in 1148, the fact is outside of the original walled enclosure seems to contradict this hypothesis. Not knowing the exact date of foundation, it is a fact that the Priory of the new church was given to S. Teotónio, mate D. Afonso Henriques, the great figure of the Church and prior to the powerful Santa Cruz Monastery in Coimbra, which had the patronage of the Church of Santa Maria to D. John III, have donated to his wife, Queen Catherine of Austria. It was also home to a collegiate community (comprised of eight prior and beneficiaries), suppressed by liberal legislation in the mid-nineteenth century.

The medieval church was radically changed by Queen Leonor in the late fifteenth century, dragging the works by the first quarter of the sixteenth century. Date of this campaign the bell tower, adjoining the facade and covered with octagonal spire pyramidal.

Certainly struck by the earthquake of 1535, about 1570 threatened to ruin, so it is immediately thought of his complete reconstruction. Thus, on August 15, 1571, the day of the Assumption of Our Lady, was launched the first stone of the new church with great pomp and religious procession, continuing the work under the protection of Queen And Catherine D. Prior Rodrigo Sanchez, Spanish cleric, chief almoner of the Queen and prestigious figure in the court of Charles V. This campaign follows its current configuration, with a probable risk of royal architect Antonio Rodrigues (pedro Flower, 2002). Nearly a century later, suffers further improvement works at the initiative of Dr. Francisco de Azevedo Prior Caminha, who redecorate the church through a program of baroque art - ceiling tiles and paintings of ships.

Beleza de ponto de visão sobre esta igreja em Óbidos , já tentei algumas fotos mas nunca gostei :), o céu nublado deu bastante dramatismo a foto , gostei muito da árvore com as folhas douradas , só acho que não deviam deixar estacionar carros nesta praça , não se enquadram com o antigo :), parabéns!!

In the past 10 days I was not really online, because the whole of Northern Malaysia and Southern Thailand were hit by floods. Even our housing estate in Alor Star, built in 1975 and never flooded, was hit the first time ever by dirty flood waters. The ground floor of our house was flooded ankle deep, but outside in the compound it was knee deep. For everybody it was the same, first they cut the tap water and three days later the power. We had to wade out of the housing estate and look for shelter in a town further south. Now we have returned to our house and started cleaning.

The main subject of the picture is the church and its interesting facade of course but the stormy sky adds a wonderful dramatic accent.

I'm really admired in front of this remarkable photo: the composition is so interesting and harmonious with all the elements, portico, church, trees and sky well integrated together. It really take out the best from this lovely architecture and make the best of the cloudy weather. I also like your PP work, always very accurate and effective in giving to the image a proper expression or atmosphere.

This is one of the most impressive skies I have seen in a photograph for a while - wodnerful contrast and a stark black and white wildness. The light on the rest of the frame is vey impressive - and you have framed the shot from a wonderful point of view. I so wish there was a way to get the cars out of the frame - but welcome to the 21st century.
