As we walked along the road outside Beng Mealea we came across this sign - a nasty reminder of the aftermath of the Indo-Chinese wars.
The Cambodian Mine Action Authority reports that 64713 people have been injured (including amputation) or killed since 1979 when the Khmer Rouge lost power due to the invasion of Cambodia by Vietnam.
Only about half of Cambodia’s minefields have been cleared to date. Fortunately for those around Beng Mealea this area was now safe.
In the workshop is a photo of one of the victims who lost limbs or eye sight in or after the war, in his case both.
