THE POWER OF MONEY, a photo from Shanghai, Est

Photographer's Note

This is another view of the Bund, a former enclave of western countries in China. The name came from the Persian and curiously many of the men who made fortune creating such buildings were Jews from Iraq.
In the right side we can see a big building, it was projected to be the highest of Asia but the owner of the building at side was so powerful that he prohibited that project because he didn't want nothing highest than his hotel and the upper part of the other building was aborted.
In the far BG you can see a modern skyscrapers similar with a pinnacle. It was the end of a Sunday afternoon and a crowd was waiting the blue hour to see the show of lights in the skyscrapers in the other side of the river.
While walking in this area many girls praised me, calling me handsome and inviting me to know them more. A pity they were paying attention to my wallet.

Essa é uma outra vista do Bund, um antigo enclave de potência estrangeiras dentro da China. O nome veio do idioma persa e curiosamente a comunidade de judeus iraquianos fez fortuna com essas construções.
No lado direito aparece um grande prédio, reparem que ele tem o topo cortado, o projeto inicial era para fazer dele o mais alto arranha-céu da Ásia, mas ao lado estava o prédio do homem mais rico da cidade e ele impediu que o projeto fosse adiante, porque não queria nenhum prédio mais alto que seu hotel que ficava ao lado.
Ao fundo vemos um moderno arranha-céu em formato de abacaxi. Reparem que era um fim de tarde de domingo e a multidão estava esperando o show de luzes nos gigantescos edifícios que ficam do outro lado do rio e que aconteceria pouco depois.
Nessa área da cidade encontrei dezenas de moças que elogiavam minha beleza e queriam ter um encontro comigo, uma pena que elas estivessem mais interessadas na minha carteira.

Ha! Ha! Jorge, you are the only man who has ever boasted of an attractive wallet ... (joking!)

I still cannot believe just how much this scene looks so very European!.
You have captured a special moment, when people are congregating to watch a light show. It must be quite a show to attract the attention of so many people!
It's a nicely composed photograph, the steps, as a guide, emerging from the bottom corner, and leading to the people and the buildings.
When I started posting on this site, I would have cloned out the half figure on the right, as it would have been criticised as poor management but, fortunately, that is no longer the case.

Hello Jorge,
I hope your wallet didn't disappear while you were distracted by any of the young ladies. Similar incidents have happened to me too a few times, and probably to most men traveling alone in big cities. In spite of everything else this looks like quite a nice area maintaining a kind of old-fashioned atmosphere. I may be mistaken, but I have a slight suspicion that you have made the PP I asked for the last time. This photo has the clarity and contrasts I prefer. Or maybe the light just was a bit better.

If this photo had come up in a quiz and I had been asked to name the country, I wouldn't have thought of China (despite the red flags on top of the buildings). A great view of this area and the many people add a lively mood.

Hello Jorge,
On TV in Belgium we had a programme on the behavior of young handsome ladies in Shanghai. They want to entice foreigners to go to eat or to have a drink with them. And the bill for that may well exceed the cost of your entire trip in China. If you don't pay, you won't look that handsome anymore afterwards.
Your picture is very attractive and shows a nice atmosphere with the crowd of visitors waiting for the blue hour and the huge buildings on the background.
I read your story about both buildings. Corruption is apparently ingrained.

Jorge, that square is a rallying point where the people gather to admire the show of light during the blue hour. They are sat on the stairs waiting with patience. The buildings on the right attest the rich past of that former enclave. Lively scene.

You have captured well a daily life scene. The point of view is showing the details of the skyscrapers. The cloudy sky does not hurt the output of the colors. Have a nice day.

por que você acha que as moças estavam interessadas apenas em sua carteira? Você não é um homem guapo? :).
Tais situações podem acontecer com os viajantes solitários - pode ser homem ou mulher, mesmo uma velha :). O show de luzes foi lindo? Em Hong Kong, a Sinfonia de luzes é famosa, mas fiquei bastante decepcionada.
