Livestock Market:
A drive to modernise the old Silk Road city of Kashgar has obliterated whole stretches of old Uighur neighbourhoods, even as the government tries to win over, residents wary of commie rule and there's a deep resentment towards China. Uighurs themselves appear to have little say in the transformation of the accompanying changes to their lives. They can do little but watch and wait as a new chapter in their long history is written for them.

Despite the crowd at this hectic market and attention is always on the ground level, there is also a great opportunity up there to make great portraits, my favourite and the subject is limitless. Frankly it is difficult to get a decent 'moving' portrait in this difficult situation as the bustling crowds pass by and people get in the way, thus patience and right timing is the key here.

This is a portrait of a proud full-blooded Uighur farmer shot taken at the Livestock market in Kashgar. I have all the time on my side as the subject is so ever-willing and I decided on 'talk and shoot' technique just to get a natural picture and by using shorter focal lenght just to emphasize his facial feature although it appears to be slightly elongated and out of proportion. But that's the effect that I want to achieve.
