Photographer's Note

Linxia, known as 'the little Mecca of China', is a stronghold of Chinese Islam. There are over 100 mosques there. Most inhabitants are descendants of ancient Silk Road muslims.

This expanding city just south of Lanzhou makes a useful transport hub, when travelling in southern Gansu.

Although there are no major tourist sites around, we found it a really interesting place to spend a couple of days.

This picture shows one of the many friendly locals we met. Those big round glasses seemed to be a real hit in the area.
